#0PORGY AND BESS world tour opens in Toronto

The world tour of PORGY AND BESS (on the road for over 10 years having played some 500 cities) landed at Toronto's historic Elgin theatre last night for the first of 8 performances. The Gershwin folk opera was well sung but woodenly acted with a smallish ensemble that nevertheless gave full value to the score. Those coming to this piece for the first time might be put off by the stodgy staging and the extensive choral sections and recitative, some of which isn't terribly pretty. There is also a stong religious undertone including several prayer sections that now make the characters seem naive and stupid. But the big arias are Gershwin at his absolute best and it is a joy to hear thim sung so well.

Has anyone else here seen this tour?

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
