Just saw it...again...for the third time lol. It just gets better and better. It is so beautiful. Emmy Rossum goes from being so innocent in the beginning to being soooo sexy at the end. The Point of No Return....wow! That whole scene is beautiful. I actually like Gerard in this. Some times he is a little...rock opera voice-ish...but other times he's great. Miranda Richardson is great as well. Please, the tickets are not that much, if you have any desire to see it, just go, see for yourself. Everyone left the theatre loving it!

I'm bumping the appreciation thread! You're much welcomed there!!
I saw the movie only twice. I wanna go again but my friends aren't into it. My sister even works in a movie theatre and can get me tickets for free but I don't wanna go by myself...lol... I think I'll just somehow get my best friend to go.
I agree with you derek- PONR is so beautiful! "Phantom of the Opera" always gives me chills. That has to be my favorite scene.

And, this movie includes, the wonder, talent, and swoon-worthiness that is Patrick *sigh* Wilson.

The Phantom, played by Gerard Butler, is supposed to be the most magnificent singer in the production but instead leaves much to be desired. His handsome features that are not hidden by the mask do little to help make the audience think of him as the vile monster he is supposed to be. Perhaps Patrick Wilson should have been cast as the phantom instead of Christine's lover Raoul since his singing was just as bad and appearance-wise he is much more repulsive. In every scene with Wilson I found myself staring at his large nose and wondering why I was supposed to find him so much more appealing than the phantom. His performance is rigid and leaves much to be improved upon to say the least.
I think my jaw is still on the floor in utter amazement at those words.

It's the wig Beacon... The wig did things to his nose. Also he very convincingly portrayed Raoul, and who's likes Raoul... (Raoul not Patrick!)

You mean like...made his profile "unbalanced"? But...he doesn't look "unbalanced" with his normal hair style...
How about THIS statement from the Los Angeles City Beat Movie reviewer Andy Klein:

"The three central roles are played by relative unknowns: Gerard Butler leaves no special impression as the Phantom, nor does Patrick Wilson as The Handsome Young Man."
No special impression...man! I must have seen a completely different film!!!!

The wig makes him look like Gloria Vanderbilt.
But does anyone really understand why this movie has tanked at the box office? The reviews were bad, but the material theoretically has a truly built-in andience. I actually thought it was review-proof. Guess they misjudged--in many depts. Start with the genre -- to the non-musical fans, it's not really a horror film (Lon Chaney, no) and without romatic leads anyone knows, it's not easily seen as a romance. Also, they erred thinking that the "title" would be the star. The film needed a bankable movie star in the lead role -- that's a simple marketing problem. The film's casting may make people in this thread happy, but no one could argue that the non-names have made it a hard-sell.

Yes it has a built in audience, you would think. I don't know if "movie stars" could have sold this. But better singer/actors could have done more with it. ALW/JS tried to go for the younger audience and for the most part failed. When the audience comes out of a film raving about the fourth and fifth billed actors and question why weren't they used more......You should know you have a problem. I wanted to love this film. Desperately. But sorry to say I did not.
