"The trouble — and it was apparent even in Harold Prince's brilliant 1976 production — is that John Weidman's fascinating but complex book is too heavy for the delicately designed bookcase provided by Sondheim's music and lyrics."

i really hate clive barnes. he tries to compliment but ultimately insults.

I wonder if he called Pacific Overtures "brilliant" in 1976?

i dont have time to read most of the reviews. are any of them positive? Marks' was the worst so far...(i read both Post's, the Times and Talkin' Broadway)

actually Murray's may have been worse...

"He hated "Follies," and preferred "Dude," which should give you an inkling about his tastes, or lack thereof"

I'd probably agree with him. Follies is the only Sondheim show I simply can't stand. The CDs gather dust. But I enjoy listening to my Dude CD. Nell Carter rocks!

You don't even like the Follies in Concert recording, Mister Matt? re: Pacific Overtures Reviews

Jacques Le Sourd of The Journal News loved it. I think that the reviews have been generally mixed and leaning to unfavorable. Some reviewers liked certain aspects of the production so I think, as should be the case with all shows, you may have to go and see it and then judge this one for yourself. I am happy that I did not let Mr. Brantley's review of "The Frogs" keep me away from that production because I quite enjoyed it and if I get the opportunity to see "Pacific Overtures" I'll definitely take it.

Pab - I have been dying to see this as a revival for a couple years now. NO reviewer could stop me from seeing this show. This is one of my all-time favorites. I will most certainly be there, beige and all. :)

i love the Follies in concert recording!

I like the performers on Follies in Concert (except Mandy's psychotic Buddie's Blues), but I just don't care for the score. I've given it many tries and it does nothing for me. And the book is just dreadful. The only saving grace is magnificent staging, but I sat through it once and struggled to stay awake.
