Is it an intimate space? Is rear mezz. a good area to sit??
Thanks for the help! : )

Posted: 4/13/05 at 3:32pmI don't think Papermill is intimate. It's more like the newer broadway houses (that keep going BACK) as opposed to the older ones where the Mezz extends over the orchestra.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 3:37pmIt's definetly a newer space, or at least has that feel. I sat in the Orchestra for Baby and in the Rear Mez for Harold and Maude. I would recommend getting Orchestra seats, if you can, as I has a much more enjoyable experience on the floor. The Mez sort of made me feel very allienated and away from the show.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 3:44pmI was in the Orchestra for Harold and Maude and felt "detatched" from the show. It's definitely a different feel from most B'way houses where you feel like you are a part of the show.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 3:48pmExactly, it almost has an auditorium feel to the space. I love the shows they choose to do, but I'm not a big fan of the space. I got a 3rd row ticket to Baker's Wife, mostly because I discovered I probably need to sit on the performer's lap to enjoy a show fully there. ANd I need to be as close to La Ripley as possible.

I was very dissapointed with Harold and Maude too, it was a very safe production/adaptation, of a very fragile, amazing screenplay. They never figured out when the characters should sing, and what exactly, they should sing about.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 3:59pmYeah -- and I was trying to figure out why the lights were coming up in the middle of a scene . . . then I realized it was intermission.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 4:03pmHehe yeah. That whole experience was wonky for me, especially due to the fact my seats were so freaking far away. But yeah, a song would end and I'd be thinking "That was the whole song?". Pointless.

Posted: 4/13/05 at 4:05pmI hate the theatre itself. Also, some of their productions have been very sub-par lately. OF THEE I SING was brilliant, but HAROLD AND MAUDE was atrocious. I will be seeing THE BAKER'S WIFE, though, because I love the show and La Ripley.

Did you guys see their season for next year? It is so commercial. They probably lost money on this current season, because they took risks (Harold And Maude, Baker's Wife, Ragtime), while they are usually safe with their play choices. Looks like they are back to safe territory.
Cinderella
Anne Frank
Carnival
Midsummer
Hello Dolly!
Ugh. Maybe Carnival, but the rest, ugh.
