Party music question?

Party playlist question? When making a disc for 3-4 hrs of music, do you usually order your list for slower, softer stuff during the cocktail hour, so people can talk?, and then rev it up gradually for the rest of the evening, ending with a bang? Most of my guests are singers/performers. I also keep on supply, small latin percussion instruments, including kazoos. I tend to be a bit OCD. All my music will be retro: 50s crooners, 60 s pop, Sinatra, Dino, Ella, jazz, Dixieland, blues, Bway, etc. Thanks in advance.
