Patrick Wilson on POTO movie, upcoming plans for film and stage work.
Interview in Tampa Tribune right after the Benefit reading of Sunset Boulevard.
Quote: ``Film is not an actor's medium,'' Wilson observes. ``Theater is an actor's medium. But I just love filmmaking, seeing how they put things together. I was very happy with [`The Alamo']. I think they played around with my scenes like anybody else's, but I can't think of anything that's missing, particularly.''
Quote:
"Wilson has already finished principal filming on his second movie, one that will bring his rich tenor to a worldwide audience: He plays Raoul in the long- awaited film version of ``The Phantom of the Opera,'' shot in London, directed by Joel Schumacher and scheduled for December release.
``It's the same as the play,'' he says. ``Fans of the musical will love it. I think it will exceed their expectations. There are no songs cut - there's actually one added. This movie is Andrew Lloyd Webber's baby, and he kept the integrity of the show. The things you only imagine in the stage version really happen on the screen. It has the intimacy that film can bring. You can look close at [the Phantom] and see the pain in his eyes.''
In the next few months, Wilson will go back for final soundtrack work on ``Phantom.'' After that, he's not sure.
``I see myself going back and forth between film and theater,'' he says. ``There's nothing I'm dying to do on Broadway right now.''
His next film? ``Nothing I can talk about,'' he says, sounding more like a Hollywood veteran than a meteoric upstart. ``There are a couple of things I'm attached to, that I might shoot in June or July. There are movies I'm offered, movies I'm up for, and you've got to balance, to pick and choose to an extent.''

Pardon me while I go and get a tissue. I have to dry my eyes from laughing so hard! Who does he think he is? My GOD, he even reads pompous!

Do you think anything in the upcoming season might use his talents? What about 2005?
I wonder if any producers would add him to "short list" for projects which are being lined up. Especially if it is between film work.
I want a chance to see him on stage--preferably in something where he sings!

I don't think that will be necessary.

So which quote was the pompous one, Al Dente?
His next film? ``Nothing I can talk about,'' he says, sounding more like a Hollywood veteran than a meteoric upstart. ``There are a couple of things I'm attached to, that I might shoot in June or July. There are movies I'm offered, movies I'm up for, and you've got to balance, to pick and choose to an extent.''
Just don't like the guy, never have, never will. At least you're not referring to him as a superstar.

Eh, the quote isn't that bad. It's hard to convey tone in text, and the interviewer also spent most of the start of the interview talking about how humble Wilson is.
Wilson is hardly a favorite of mine, though. If you don't like him, that's fine by me. And I'm on record about how I feel about the word 'superstar.' :)

Do you think they'll have a large premiere of the movie in NYC?
For some reason I'm thinking the world premiere might be in London where it was filmed...
But, it'd be great to have a big party in NYC with all the prinicipals! :o)

I think his mention of Broadway and theatre does give us some hope... and I do like that quote. It makes me feel like maybe he will come back. I hope he does.
His quote about the Alamo was a hoot. The film had a hatchet taken to it in the editing room & the critics picked up on it . They said scenes that should have been cut went on & on & vise versa. A four hour cut went to 3 hours to a final 2 hours & 17 minutes . What is Mr Wilson smoking ?

"Disney’s expensive flop “The Alamo” came in at No. 10 with $4.05 million in its second weekend. “The Alamo” cost about $140 million to make and market but has grossed just $16.3 million." Is that the sound of a toilet flushng?
Movie carreer? We think not!

Wilson wasn't being counted on to carry that movie, just like he isn't carrying POTO. With both of those movies, other names, or the name of the movie itself, were supposed to catch the public's eye. Wilson won't be blamed if POTO flops, just like he shouldn't be blamed for what's happening to Alamo. These roles aren't supposed to make him a star- they're supposed to build his reputation as a screen actor. Whether they actually will remains to be seen.
i wish him the very best of luck, and i saw no pompousnes in any of his quotes. if you dont like him, you dont like him, but that doesnt mean you should fabricate subtext which does not exist.

I agree, nystateomind04.
My best wishes to Patrick Wilson in all aspects of his life and career.
I loved seeing him in "Angels in America" (re-broadcast will start June 3, one "chapter" per week) and now its great to have the chance to see him on the Big Screen in "The Alamo" and POTO.
He's a wonderful actor...I love watching him when he's the one "reacting" to another person's dialogue/action. He really stays in character.
Of course, I look forward to the day I can see him live on Broadway both acting and singing.
Yes, I'm a fan. I admit it freely and I seek no "12-step program" to change that fact. :o)

I dunno what to think, I love Patrick but I agree that some of it sounded a little pompous. Oh well I am glad that he's still thinking about Broadway, maybe he will come back some day... I am really looking forward to POTO, I love the show and I was really glad to hear that they weren't taking out any songs!
can someone point out what sounds pompous? i dont see it. he said that he didnt want to do anything on broadway right now, and naturally that pisses some people here off. i'd call it honesty.
Personally, I think the only part the sounds pompous was:
<"His next film? ``Nothing I can talk about,'' he says, sounding more like a Hollywood veteran than a meteoric upstart. ``There are a couple of things I'm attached to, that I might shoot in June or July. There are movies I'm offered, movies I'm up for, and you've got to balance, to pick and choose to an extent.">
It's not like anything was particularly offensive, but for me, it just came off as...pompous, for lack of a better word.

I don't even like Wilson that much, but I'm not seeing the pompousness. The part about sounding like a Hollywood veteran was inserted by the article's author, so I don't trust it.
So is it the part about getting to pick and choose parts? I'm sure, since he's only quasi-famous, that he's being offered a lot of not-so-good parts he'd be better off not choosing. He's just trying to avoid more duds like The Alamo, but he didn't say, "I'm up for a lot of parts that aren't good enough for me."
He's just saying he isn't absolutely attached to any roles right now. He's probably being considered for some parts in movies stuck in Development Hell, and doesn't know whether he'll be hired or the movie will actually shoot. He's being honest. Where's the arrogance?
