Just heard from a very reliable source that Patrick Wilson will be singing the National Anthem at the Yankee/Red Sox game this Friday, 5/27 in New York.
I checked their schedule and the game starts at 7:05pm ET so check your local listings to see if it is broadcast in your area, tune in/set your recorders for at least 7pm ET!

Posted: 5/24/05 at 9:19amAs someone who watches almost every Yankee game, they usually don't show the singing of the national anthem on TV. It just starts with the ballgame. BUT, besides being shown on the YES Network (Yankee Entertainment Television), it will also be broadcast on ESPN, and I'm not sure what ESPN does.

How dare they cut out Patrick Wilson singing...that would be awful.
And, I've seen the National Anthem sung at other baseball games. Is that a Yankees quirk? Don't they usually get the team on the field, sing the anthem and yell "play ball"?

Chances are Yankees/Red Sox will have extra pregame hype and the anthem may be shown.
Is Wilson a belter....how will he do? He was a decent Raoul in the movie but I have never seen him on stage.
And I am not bashing him!

I think that's only in games like the All Star Game, playoffs and World Series where singing the anthem is televised - I don't think they show it at Mets games either. All the games I've seen, it starts with the commentators talking about the game, a commercial, and then the first pitch. But having said all that, there isn't a "live" person singing at every game, it's usually a recording. So I guess there's a chance.

Posted: 5/24/05 at 2:05pmYeah I watch Yankee games all the time and I would be shocked if they did actually broadcast it. The national anthem is only shown really during playoffs, opening day, all star game, etc. Too bad he's not singnig God Bless America, that is usually shown. Your best bet would be listening to the radio. I've heard it more on radio than on TV, though usually they'll be talking over it.

Posted: 5/24/05 at 2:15pmAs a Sox fan, that might actually get me to set foot in Yankee Stadium. But as my favorite saying is "The Devil Wears Pinstripes", even my love for Patrick Wilson cannot make me enter. And, as I work in sports tv, I can tell you that the national anthem will probably not be broadcast. It's insanely hard to get the timing down just right, so the anthem is usually not broadcast at smaller events.

Doesn't WOR carry it? And YES and ESPN2...
The problem is...which station might be more likely to consider showing us the national anthem... there have been mixed thoughts on this.
Emcee...can't you smile your way in and stay just for his part?

The game will be televised nationally on ESPN, starting at 7pm. I highly doubt that ESPN will cover the anthem, however, and it will most likely be blacked out if you're in the NYC area. Fellow New Yorkers, the game will also be on the YES Network. If you're in the Boston area (except the metro area), or if you have Satellite Cable, it will be aired on NESN. As for radio, the game will be on WEEI 850 AM in Boston and on WCBS 880 AM in New York. If you have XM Satellite Radio, the game will be on Channel 176, and will either be BOS local radio or NY local radio. As a transplanted Bostonian in New York, and a certified Boston sports fanatic, I'm basically screwed all ways around. No Patrick (most likely), and I have to listed to biased Yankee broadcasters. Fun fun.

I watch alot of RedSox games and they never cover the Anthem either unless they come back early from a commercial. Same on the radio network.
The ESPN coverage would be blacked out in Boston too.
BTW, WEEI is 850 AM in Boston and 103.1 FM in Providence.

Posted: 5/27/05 at 2:42pmThey might not black-out ESPN in Boston, though it's a possibility. They usually only black-out in the home market, since the point of black-out is to get people to buy tickets and go to the game. But your point still stands that ESPN might black-out Boston. But it's probably moot anyways, since we never rarely air anthems.

I read in the Boston paper this morning it was blacked out. They blacked out TBS last weekend when the Braves were here.
Kinda sux, I like hearing different announcers.
Maybe you can hear it if you stand on the subway platform behind the Stadium, lol.

Does it matter at all that George Steinbrenner is a fan of Patrick's? In fact, he had him sing at the annual recognition dinner for coaches in Hillsborough County in Florida a couple of weeks ago. Patrick's dad (a local FOX News Anchor) was the emcee for the evening and Patrick sang.
Couldn't George pull some strings?

Well, a fan just posted over on Patrick's fan site "The Lair" that she had a friend attending the game who called her via cell when Patrick sang and left it as a VM.
Apparently he was in absolutley stupendous voice tonight before the sell out crowd. She says he sounds amazing. He nailed the word "free" beautifully and the crowd went "wiiiild"--and they really gave him a resounding ovation when he finished.
Darn you YES and ESPN for robbing us of that moment!

Yeah, because I'm sure the announcers on NESN are completely un-biased. Go Yankees!
FYI, the national anthem is only really aired on special occasions, such as the playoffs, or sometimes if the game is nationally televised. Most of the time, if you're actually at the stadium, the anthem is a recording.

I was in my car listening to the pre-game show and they didn't broadcast the Anthem. However, the announcers mentioned that it had been sung by "Broadway star Patrick Wilson" and they raved about his performance.
Now I have to get my car fumagated because I was listening to a Yankees game!!!!
DAMNED YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!

He needs to sing 'God Bless America'. WEEI Radio here in Boston usually plays that performance, but rarely the National Anthem. That's a shame.
Oh, and about the bias-ness of NESN: the pre-game show is biased, of course (its Red Sox pre-game after all!). As for the Sox TV announcers, Orsillo and Remy, they aren't that biased. Of course, this is coming from a Sox fan
BTW, I'm liking today's game
