"How can someone NOT jump on his feet, after THAT incredible performance, is beyond me !!!"
Well, I've seen a lot of incredible performances that no one stood for, performances that I thought were a lot better than LuPone's Rose.
One fascinating bit of old footage is of the Merman's curtain call in Gypsy. She comes out, bows quickly, and then calls Sandra Church and Jack Klugman back out to join her. I don't know if it's the essence of modesty or self-confidence or what, but she takes her solo call very quickly.
I saw her first performance at the Ravinia Festival a couple years ago- complete standing ovation the second the song finished. The whole place went nuts.
Finally saw the Broadway production at the end of October, and while there was a great deal of applause, no standing ovation. But Boyd did receive a hefty amount of entrance applause (as did Laura and Patti).
I have seen it twice. The first time there was a standing ovation following Rose's Turn, but not everyone stood. About 70% of the house. Then I saw it again in July and EVERYONE stood the moment the song finished. I was sat front row (ah, the glory of rush!) and the second she uttered/screamed her last "For meeeeeeeee" I jumped to my feet, joined of course by everyone else, and just clapped and hollered and everything until I was red in the hand and blue in the face.
Boyd got entrance applause one of the times I saw it, which was really nice.
At what part did Laura get entrance applause? There's really no sole entrance for her when the kids "grow up." I think during the show after the Tony's people were clapping for her during the next scene when she's waking everyone up. I would've loved to be at that performance. And I assume something similar will happen closing night.
Saw Peters twice and Lupone twice and both got standing ovation after Rose's Turn. The only other broadway show I have seen the happen was Brian Stokes after the impossible dream in la mancha. I have seen it happen at the met on rare occasion after an aria.
For me, the best way to tell a performer that they were incredible. Is keeping the spirit of Broadway alive, by talking about it, seeing shows, and feeling positive about being privileged to expiereince
99% PURE Stamina and Talent
1% Ego ,just for you Patti :)
I am a stage door OCD addict. But I personally think getting autographs, pictures, talking at Stage door with the actors, and standing ovations, are GREAT for both the actors and audience. But is the backdrop of showing Gratitude.
The aura of emotion is more proof than anything.
*I know there are many different views on what makes talent.
Saw it in May. I think there was a total standing ovation, starting with my friends and me in the balcony. We just like jumped up and went cray. Screaming crazy.
