Oh gosh, don't I feel like a jerk now... I'm so sorry for getting everybody's hopes up! She was definitely turning away to cough between songs and such, but I really didn't think this would happen. I guess it's a similar situation to Audra in Porgy (albeit on a smaller scale, of course) -- pro that she is, she probably pushed herself too hard through illness to come back and knock it out of the park, and ended up much sicker than before.
Once again, apologies for inadvertently giving false hope/information... here's hoping she comes back for another engagement, and soon!
You're not a jerk CallItQuits, your review was wonderful. My friend said she was coughing on June 16, her original last performance, yet she still soldiered on with more performances. The consummate professional.
I'm willing to cut 54 Below some slack, given that they only recently opened, but they didn't handle this cancellation very well.
I was scheduled to see Ms. LuPone on Wednesday night. I received an email early in the day that she was ill and had to cancel -- I immediately called and rescheduled for Friday night. However, I never received any cancellation notice on Friday. I only found out that the performance was cancelled by randomly reading this board shortly before heading to the venue.
I talked to people at 54 Below both on Wednesday, and when I read about the cancellation on Friday. They didn't quite seem to have their act together about what to say to customers. I'm looking forward to seeing the performances at 54 Below, and I hope they have a more professional cancellation procedure in place going forward.
Had tickets for last night, too. Bummed, but impressed with how speedy and thorough both 54 and Ticketweb were with getting the word out. I think I got five emails in the course of ten minutes.
They were very quick with the notifications. I read the uh oh comment first so I had a feeling that something was up. Shortly after I got at least three emails explaining the situation. I think they handled it the best they could.
