You're so right! Nancy Opel, Carolee Carmello, or hope about this... Brand-New Tony Award Winner Victoria Clark! All 3 have been Penelope Pennywise in Urinetown, and if they can pull off the accent, all three would kick ass!
A performer needs to bring so many quirks and subtle characteristics to Mrs. Lovett that they begin to add up into one amazingly disturbed/disturbing/hilarious/sad/sexy character.
Victoria Clark is tied up with "The Light in the Piazza" until January 1, 2006. This production begins performances in early October. So, she could not do Mrs. Lovett. Although, she would be smashing in the role.
Vicki! Great idea. Or Carolee Carmello. Judy Kaye?
After seeing Light in the Piazza this weekend - I feel that there is NOTHING Victoria Clark cannot do - she would be an AMAZING Lovett - but I have nothing against Patti doing it.
YAY Vicki! Thanks for the support, guys! I say we petition to put off the production until spring so we can get Vicki suited up for the role and win her another Tony! She would be brilliant. A lot of people have said that after seeing Vicki's performance in Piazza that there is nothing she can't do, and I agree. I vote to have Patti play the Beggar Woman. I say she'd be wonderful in the more featured role.
IMO, She's a name they need to bring in a crowd. And it's not like it's a first time for her to make the meat pies. Mrs. Lovett can be played several ways. Much depends on your expectations of the role. Patti will be fine and make the role her own...like everything else she does.
In the aftermath of LaCage, it gets riskier with each show.
