Patti sounds great in those two clips, however I can't judge whether or not she woulda/coulda/shoulda beat Joanna for the Tony. I can say that during "Anything Goes" I didn't understand a single word she said other than "Anything goes". I'm a big fan of Patti, but after seeing those clips, I get the jokes about her enunciation (or lack thereof).
INORITE. Her tony performance is ridiculously hilarious.

Her "Anything Goes" sounded like the best drunk karaoke performance in world history-- brilliant pipes, crazy slurred enunciation. She looked great in her costume, though, and I had no idea she could tap dance. Somehow, it's bizarre to think of Patti LuPone tap dancing.
Thanks for the Patti/Reno clips, PJ.

It's called "being versatile."
That was a great part of the fun, Schmerg. The last time New York had seen her was on her death bed in "Evita" (except for those few who caught her getting her brains bashed out in "Oliver").
Seeing a supposed musical theater tragedienne tap dancing and singing "Friendship" was a hoot--and an eye-opener.
It was certainly a Tony-worthy performance, but Joanna Gleason was really special. It was one of those performances that continued to surprise you the whole evening.

I think it's a shame that Patti is so funny, but she's spent so much of her career dying (either naturally or by...being bludgeoned to death). If she does another show, be it a musical or a straight play, I'd love for it to be a comedy.
There was no uproar over Joanna Gleason winning the tony that year. They were both phenomenal and either could've won with no furor. Gleason deserved it a bit more, imo. That performance was just so special. Her acceptance speech was great too, mentioning that she felt like Cinderella at the ball.
The Drama Desks, however, had them both winning, Patti for Actress and Joanna for Sup. Actress. Peters was nominated for Best Actress as well, but Patti won that one. Gleason managed to take Sup. Actress over the eventual Tony winner, Judy Kaye for Phantom and her castmate Danielle Ferland.

I guess I'm just a little too accustomed to the old isotoners.
but is it more bizarre to think of her tap dancing or playing the tuba? personally, I think the tuba is more incongruous.
And here she is doing a spectacularly vulgar "Blow Gabriel Blow" for George and Barbara Bush at the White House, including the now-legendary butt-slap at 2:55
What is important to notice about that video is the fact that her look was indeed fashionable and popular long before it became strictly reserved for bridesmaids in Jersey.
Givesmevoice-- it's just the fact that the lady who did Gypsy in slippers used to tap-dance on Bradway... I don't know, never mind. I usually don't even make sense to myself. But yes, I definitely laughed when I first learned about the tuba.
haha, no, I wasn't trying to be mean or anything. but I think the tuba is the weirder of the two. I honestly think it's not hard to imagine her as a dancer, judging by the fact that she still moves very well. (and the video of her at Juilliard doing a front walkover is equally impressive, imo.)
