Patty Duke Replaced in Golda's Balcony

Just read on the other Theater Chat Board that Patty Duke has been replaced in Golda's Balcony.
The story was reported on Playbill. Com
Playbill News: Valerie Harper to Play Meir in Golda's Balcony Tour.
Very sad news....

I love Valerie Harper! I hope this is true.

cliff, is there any more detail?

EDIT: Just read Playbill. No details given. Hmmmm.....I wish I got paid for my predictions - between this one (which was jumped all over on this board) and Kathleen Turner ruling in WOOLF, I'd be a rich woman.

I hope it has nothing to do with Ms. Duke's recent heart procedure. I adore her and she is an amazing actress. Having said that, Valerie Harper is great and her Golda "ain't gonna be chopped liver!" Wait and see. Betcha she morphs and wows em.

Have you ever thought of taking a job as Broadway's resident oracle?

TONY, I'm sure if it was for medical reasons, that would be public. The fact that there is no reason given makes me believe it's because the usually terrific Ms. Duke just wasn't working out - the best actor in the world can't overcome being wrong for a role.

meffie - just tell me where to apply!

I don't want to be an oracle, WISH. I was suggesting it as a possible position for Rath, who seems to know everything before critics/producers/insiders do.

re: Patty Duke Replaced in Golda's Balcony

well maybe you two can be co oracles,,,,you both seem like very divine theaterlovers......
Rath, I dunno,I have had teachers and have heard it said that there are some actors who's possibilties know no bounds. I have been at lectures and read pieces where some folks (I am certainly not sure if I agree with them)state that ABSOLUTELY some great actors CAN overcome being "wrong" for a role.
CLEARLY, in the past Ms. Harper has shown she can "emanate the Jewishness from inside," as she did for her many Emmy awards for playing Rhoda, first on THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW and then on RHODA. I think she will be great. And I hope Patty Duke's health is not giving her problems.

re: Patty Duke Replaced in Golda's Balcony

I think it's very difficult for an Irish girl to play Jewish - and I am one of the biggest Patty Duke fans out there, believe me. I think what you said about Harper is the exact reason Duke was not working out, and I believed that from the day it was announced.
