This is one of those times, I'm glad I ignored the board and saw a show anyway. Maybe I'd feel differently if I knew the source material but I really enjoyed what they presented. It was funny. The acting was engaging. And I felt like it touched on the themes it was concerned with relatively well while sidestepping what felt like unsavory elements in the original. Perfect? No. Entertaining and worth seeing? Absolutely. I've seen countless off-Broadway plays that were much worse than this, including CSC's own Mother Courage.
Thanks Emmaloucbway!
I'm seeing this today and am trying to go into it with an open mind. I'm glad to hear some positive things.

one of the worst things ive seen in my six years of living in NYC, John Doyle is one of the most pretentious directors ive ever had the misfortune of stupidly sitting through several productions of his, seriously the LONGEST 2 hours of my life, and dont get me started on how Quincy Tyler Bernstein is WASTED.
Audience was half empty (and this is with papering going on) and I counted at least 8 people asleep, felt SO bad everytime the house lights came up, all i could think of was how the actors could see the dozens of empty seats, and man points to the ballsy dude that flat out just left an hour and a half in and went right across the theater and out the door.
