Perchik's last note in "Now I Have Everything"

Singers: Is this a strange note, difficult to land in the context/build of the song? I've heard that actors who play the role a long time can get a kind of block about it -- sort of a FIDDLER curse -- because it doesn't comfortably fit ontop the song, or the general feel of the rest of the score. The song was eliminated from the film, but it's still a lovely moment in the stage show, the makes the proposal to Hodel that much more moving. Just curious.

So I was unfamiliar with this song until now. But I looked it up on the site that must not be named and listened to two different versions. I don't think it's that big of a deal. What I think you mean is that it sounds like the note should resolve down (a whole step?) for the ending, but it doesn't. It is a little awkward, but hey, it is obviously memorable because of that...

Thanks to you both. Yes, it's that unpredictable resolution. I'd heard from two friends that it's the kind of song a good singer starts to want to play with in a long run -- a bridge that doesn't quite fit, a rushed final verse, then the resolution you speak of. I'm always intrigued about the impact of long runs on performance. I've heard that sometimes so-called "easier" material can get away from you.

The last note is an E natural - which, while it is a slightly odd resolution, also poses problems with regards to technique, as it sits right in s passaggio in many lower voices.
So, depending on your voice type it can be a tiny bit tricky to not only resolve to the note, but also to sustain its resonance.
