There's no reason to discount foreign revenue, especially for a movie entirely funded by foreign money.
I think the movie was probably a letdown in the sense that it wasn't the biggest movie musical of all-time, which was probably Andrew's hope, but everyone involved made money, too.

am i like one of the only few people who actually liked the movie? awww, how sad, i'm alone on this. i personally thought it was really great but i don't think, profit wise, it did as well as people were expecting it to be. maybe coz of the late release in some areas or maybe coz it was advertised too much?? i dunno.
Yes, I'm pinay. And I'm proud of it!

I wasn't discounting foreign revenue, but I think the domestic gross was a lot lower than expected. (Some movies have done extremely well abroad, even when they didn't do all that well domestically.)
I liked the movie. Didn't love it, but liked it. My friend (who hasn't seen the show) really enjoyed it, and there was a lady there who commented on the sound -- it had moved to one of the smaller screens by that time, and she said the sound was much better the first time. So she liked it enough to come back.
I definitely plan on buying the DVD, which I think is supposed to be released in April? Amazon says May 3.

i loved the movie, and i'm not going to make this biased cuz i didn't hold expectations that it would be HUGE... i saw satisfied as i'm sure MANY other fans were. so what if it wasn't perfect? so what if it didn't make more money than chicago? but you can't blame it not doing well on it being "overly long" cuz that makes no sense. people went to see it if they were interested... they weren't turned away because it was "long." i can't wait for it to come out on DVD... i'll be there to buy it the 1st day.

The movie definitely wasn't a flop. Anytime a movie makes over 50 Million at the box office that is a respectable draw at the box office. You also have to remember that in the beginning, the movie was only playing in select cities. I was amazed how well it did in the theater.

That's not really true Jackson. If you have a film like ALEXANDER that costs 200 million dollars and makes only 50 at the box office, you can't call it a respectable draw....
Flop technically means the product didn't make back its money. Phantom technically flopped in the United States, but was a modest success in the global film market.

Yup, the DVD comes out in the US May 3...41 days and counting(Zeppie not updating your countdown again, tsk, tsk.)
I loved it too, and I will be getting the DVD the first day as well, and I know a lot of people who said they will watch the DVD when I get it. Again, considering the reviews, which I still don't get as everyone I personally know who saw it either loved it or liked it...whatever, I think it did pretty well.

Though not a blockbuster, PHANTOM was hardly a flop. It made a small profit with it's gross worldwide and make more of a profit with the DVD. It wasn't perfect, but I liked it. I think that the reason it was it fared less than expected was, as everyone said: the limited release to wide release, putting absoultely no names in it (you can argue minnie driver, but, come on who's going to go see a movie musical only because Minnie Driver is in it?) And they were depending on reviews to help boost the b.o. (which isn't a smart move, whether the film's a masterpiece or not) and advertising was pretty bad. The best advertising they had was on a few tv shows (i.e. THE VIEW: if yo uwatched it, they basically dedicated the entire episode to PHANTOM and fawned over Emmy). You can say you hated it or loved it, that doesn't make it a fact that it was great or horrible. But it's a fact that it wasn't a flop. Techincally, I'm not quite sure, but respectively it was far from it.

I think the DVD will make a lot of $$$ and £££. I didn't care much for the film, but I will buy the DVD. It should appeal to a fair number of musicals fans and also to fans of The Phantom of the Opera who will buy anything connected with the story.
