Does anyone know if it's true that Paul Stanley will be coming to New York as the Phantom? Thanks.

As of now, I haven't heard of such a thing. It looks like Hugh Panaro will be staying as the Phantom for some time. Thank goodness! :)

We need Gerard Butler to do the Phantom now while he's doing the movie.

I think Hugh Panaro and JLT should hook up because both their names sound like either a sandwich restaraunt or a sandwich...
Panaro:Panara
JLT:BLT

except JLT is married...and has a baby...

But other than that!

Gerard Butler doing phantom on broadway would be horrendous.

From what I've seen, he's not even half as talented as any of the Phantom's I've seen. Plus, he would NEVER do it - I'd be willing to put money on it.

The phantom is supposed to be able to sing and sing well, thats part of the story. Whenever I hear clips of Butler singing, I can hear the digital magic done to make his voice tolerable. Just my opinion, don't mean to offend. I know that some stage phantoms haven't been the best, but at least they've had some vocal training and can somewhat hold their own for the part.

Lets address somethign here you guys. Gerard Butler is not a big name and there has to be SOME reson why he was cast. That's why I made the post about maybe he's supposed to sing like that cause hes a deformed creature and he "needs Christine to feed him a voice" or something. Is ALW happy with the final track? There are many ways that his singing can be seen as good but there are times where I think "is this a joke? because he really can sound awful some moments and amazing at others. Why was he cast?

Because ALW wanted him to. That is the reason why he was cast. And we need to leave it at that people. You can complain and pout all you want but he is in the movie and nothing you do will change it. So, there. BOOYAH!

spider, i want to confirm something here. I like Gerard and the things he does with the part. I also find it interesting though that the chose someone with such a different kind of voice. Is that good or bad in the long run. Im just thinking baout 2 months from now when a lot of people will be thinking how hes awful cause im hearing it already from people outside this board. Will this hurt the movie?

Why are you now saying you don't like him? You just recommended that he come to Broadway?

Ok, here is my opinion. I think he does a great job. I really did not like him when I first heard him. Infact, I was almost to the point of tears because I thought they ruined my favorite show. BUT, and this is a very big BUT, now I love his interpretation. It is gritty and passionate and you hear all these emotions pouring out of his voice (which you DO NOT get with Crawford.....even though Crawford is technically a better singer). And who cares what other people think? If you like something, I say bunk what others think. Everyone has their own opinion (it is called free will) and I am all for it. People think that Queen Latifah was horrible in CHICAGO and I completely dissagree. No matter who was hired, someone was going to hate it. It is just human nature. And, in regards to Phantom fans, the ones that were in an uproar about Crawford not portraying the Phantom when it was first announced were people on various Phantom of the Opera websites. But, now I go to phantomfans.net all the time and they actually LOVE Gerard's voice. Infact, there is a thread there dedicated to Gerry love. That right there shows me that ALW picked the right man.

I'm glad that he hasn't ruined your favorite show for you. I suspect what has happened is what psychologists call the "Proximity Effect."

"PROXIMITY:

mere exposure effect--- repeated exposure to novel stimuli increases liking of them"

I think that Gerard might do well enough in the film, but I doubt that he would be up to eight show a week on Broadway any time soon---he's a movie actor anyway, and probably has other projects lined up.

"We need Gerard Butler to do the Phantom now while he's doing the movie. "

Not going to happen. Singing on a live stage is not an easy thing to do, especially when it's done 8 times a week. Gerry Butler hasn't had sufficient vocal training to be able to sing that part that often.

Singing in a film in no way prepares anyone for singing on the stage. Even Hugh Jackman, who has done musical theatre before in Australia, had some extra training with an opera singer in Prague (during Van Helsing filming) to prepare him for the grueling pace of singing 20 songs 8 times a week in BFO.

It's a nice thought BBE, but to be realistic, it will not work.

Phantom is ALW's. If he chose Butler, than there must be a reason. He hasn't disowned this film yet, like he did to Evita, so there's gotta be some reasoning for the casting. Let's wait until we all see the movie before we atart bashing.

Oh, and you can't take bronx too seriously. Just think of bronx's posts as lighthearted humor, and he's great. Must I remind everyone one of the thread about nipples recently? lol

Excellent point... I've been saying this elsewhere. Unfortunately, some people just live to bash.

Bronxboundexpress: I don't mean to be rude, but please learn a backstory before you start spouting off theories. As I said in response to your other post, the Phantom DOES have a good voice--to everyone. He is not mentally challenged, nor does he need Christine to "feed him his voice" Honestly, I don't even know what that means.

Just a few things to clarify. I assume Hugh P. will stay as the Phantom on stage. Have not heard any different.

Now to the film version. Since the Phantom's character is different than the stage version I doubt Gerry would go onstage to do the show. Plus from what I understand he has several films to do.

Also, ALW was not the person who picked Gerry it was Joel S. then Gerry had to audition for ALW. They went with a different idea in the film for the characters than what is on stage. I think that was a good idea. More in line wiht the old Phantom films. Remember film is different from live stage, you can do more with film and put more into the story.

Anyway, I thought the cast very good. I have heard the music clips online and the cast sings so much better in the film. They had many sound tracks and used various versions. I hope that the 2 CD set will have more of the sound that I heard when I saw the film.

I also never heard that the Phantom ever had to be a great singer. Most vocal coaches are not singers, at least mine was not. Anyway, wait to see the film before going by what you hear. I was very worried after hearing the songs and then going to see the film, but it turned out O.K.

Anyway, my 2 cents. Yes I am the moderator of the official Phantom message board, but that does not mean I cannot have my own opionions. I enjoyed the film. There were a few things maybe I did not like as much as the stage version...but by far I like the film much better. Now I will be able to have a copy of it.

The reason for not using MC or other people who have done it on stage is as old as film iteself. They wanted to change the characters to be a little different. Raoul has a bigger part, some scenes from the book came to view. So things change in a film. You have to realize that using a person that has doen a part for soemthign like 1300 times or 800 times is going to be hard for them to change the way they do the character.

Yours,

Carolyn

"but his voice filled my spirit with a strange sweet sound, and that night there was music in my mind....And through music my soul began to soar. And I heard as I've never heard before."

Christine singing about the phantom on the rooftop (right before all I ask of you).

There is much more detail about his voice in the books. Lots of references to "an angel's voice and a devil's face"
