Posted: 4/9/08 at 1:36pmWhat do you mean 'this is the point of this thread'?? I tell you in the post what's just been announced here in London!

I think maybe The Stage figured since Ben was writing the lyrics he was still involved in the book portion. I read ages ago he was out completely book and lyrics.
I think it if were official it would have been announced by ALW on his Website. My thoughts.

Posted: 4/9/08 at 2:13pmDoes it matter who's writing really? Is there any way that this is not going to absolutely suck?

Well, I only care about the music since I will never see the show. It is opening in London and may never come across to the US.
Check out Playbill's article.
I guess we just wait and see what it is all about.

Carolyn

With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Those Brits don't make much sense anyway. Ever gone over to the West End board?
Eek!

I just hope if they really are basing it on that book they completely change it. That was one of the worst books I've ever read. Insulting to Gaston Leroux and completely untrue to the characters. The plot was just laughable (and not in a good way).
Most of the fans hate it. If the fans aren't on board, it'll be a disaster.
And I hate Andrew Lloyd Webber's insistence on adding importance to Madame Giry's character. It's frustrating and ridiculous. I hate her involvement in the whole thing, especially the scenes Andrew added to the Phantom movie.

I especially wondered that it seems official Glen Slater will be the lyricist though only weeks ago, ALW said he wants Tim Rice and made it sound like Rice was nearly in the boat for that.
Not that Slater is a bad lyricist, not at all.

The Tim Rice story was wrong. He had hoped when he first started the project that Rice would do the lyrics. But Time said did not get on board and then he went looking for another person. So now there are more rumors running around. The British newspapers like to take old news and make it new or post things they pick up from who knows where. It is all confusing now who the players are.
One report says only Ben is writing the book, another says Ben and Andrew are writing it together...and yet another says Andrew already wrote the book. It may be that he has revamped it again. As for the original book, Andrew did say he did not like the plot in one of his video blogs, so who knows where it is going now.:) Most of what is said is from some source and no one knows who the source is that all this is happening.
ALW has posted nothing but the Playbill article about Slater on his Website in the past few weeks. He never mentioned Tim Rice that was mentioned in another news article that he originally planned on having Tim. Anyway, it is one big mess as to what is happening.
ALW has not mentioned anything recently except the theatre he wanted to open the show in is now going to be used for OLIVER and he has moved Phantom 2 until later in 2009. All this can change too. :)

Carolyn

HOW MUCH CLEARED DO YOU WANT IT?
Ben Elton has just been confirmed he's writing it and Mr Forsyth is no longer involved!
