Posted: 9/1/05 at 12:43pmAccording to various reports, the 2 contacts give the eye an eerie, milky-quality, which adds to the physical disfigurement of the Phantom. True, the people in the balcony can't see it, but it helps to create the character, and that was the original design. There is a great book called "The Complete Phantom of the Opera" - you can purchase it on Amazon.com - it has more information about the creation of the makeup/design, etc.
