Why is it that in the musical two different colored contact lenses has to be worn? i mean, what is the point??? it only just makes eyesight worse when on stage.

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky. With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high! Blood-red were the spurs i' the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat, when they shot him down on the highway, down like a dog on the highway, and he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat... (The Highwayman. Sung by: Loreena McKennitt)

According to various reports, the 2 contacts give the eye an eerie, milky-quality, which adds to the physical disfigurement of the Phantom. True, the people in the balcony can't see it, but it helps to create the character, and that was the original design. There is a great book called "The Complete Phantom of the Opera" - you can purchase it on Amazon.com - it has more information about the creation of the makeup/design, etc.

I'm pretty sure no stage Phantom other than Michael Crawford has worn the white eye, it was dropped in NY previews.

They don't. It was too dangerous to impair the vision of the actor playing the Phantom.
