Phantom is an "old show"

LOL...

Cerrone was one of eight nominated for Best Actor this year for his role in Meshugganuns, a sequel to "Nunsense." The play was one of 250 productions that qualified for the 2006 Perry Awards.

"It finally hit me when I had it in my hands, and it's a great recognition," said Cerrone. "Community theatre is a great outlet for people that are just so dedicated to the craft. They dedicate their time and they don't get paid."

As for what's next, Cerrone looks forward to his next collaboration with the Park Players.

"I want to get involved in another show with them," said Cerrone. "I would love to do one of the old shows like Carousel or Phantom of the Opera."

Sorry, dude

Well it did open 18 years or so ago.. I guess the 80's falls under classics now?? lol I have to admit I still consider Phantom to be a contemporary show... just like les miz or miss saigon.. something like wicked is still new too me within the context of blockbuster musicals.. IMO :)

In the context of the quote, I look at it this way -- Phantom is so new that its rights haven't even been released for regional/community theatre. You can't be an old show/warhorse like Carousel if the original production is the only one that's ever been done.

A little O/T but:

Why exactly have the regional "Phantom" rights never been released? Why can't amateur / theatre companies perform it?

I would doubt that they will ever be released. EVER.

Amateur rights? For "Phantom of the Opera"? It'll never happen. Could you see high-schoolers singing Carlotta or Christine's notes? It's be like suicide!

And yet that's what they said about Les Mis. It'll happen when Phantom closes on Broadway, some year.

By a certain standard, I suppose it is old, but... uh, not old enough to bracket it together with CAROUSEL.

Oh man this is funny cause just yesterday I saw the RENT tour being billed as a "classical musical" in the arts section of my local newspaper.

It's not old until everyone in the original company's dead.

But it's kinda funny that someone would call it old. I'd call it older, but not old.
