Does anyone know if the rights will be avaliable in the near future?
Probably in a few years AFTER the show closes and people will have to pay out the butt to be able to do it.

You can actually apply for the rights from the Really Useful Group.

Go there and click on "Put on a Show." You can inquire about putting on any of Andrew Lloyd Webber's shows, including The Phantom of the Opera.
I tried applying for the rights about, oooh, a year ago? They emailed me back saying they do not give the rights out to anyone. I don't think they'll be available for many more years yet. There's always the many many other versions of Phantom you could do.
I think after PHANTOM hits the longest running show on Broadway record, you'll see a couple of productions at some well known regional theatres, just as you did with SUNSET BOULEVARD.
But I think general regional rights are still a long way off (5-10 years). They are still incredibly picky about granting rights to CATS.

Well, now the rights for CATS are being released little by little...they said Jan. 2006 somewhere. I know a theatre nearby that's doing it next season.
There's a dinner theatre here doing Cats right now (not like, this second, but you know what I mean)

I know of a high school in Louisiana that is doing Cats next year. A girl I know at this school told me that she is up for Grizabella.
Even if the rights were released, I'm sure ALW would want your soul as payment.
You'll have to sacrifice your first born to get the rights.
