Yeah, but fiction is what Broadway is all about.
Did you know that Idina didn't actually fly but a machine did?

I thought the whole thing was a snore. It could have just been an oratorio, the story is just so thin. I thought the book felt like it was written for Americans that take those bus trips around Italy. (I know, I know they are tourists) Just too many references to tourism and not enough about real living.
Guettal's work just doesn't seem to jive with the crappy book. I do like the idea of a mother who is afraid for her daughter because she is "challenged." I know people in the same situation, but like give us a story. That hat thing was corny at best. The tour is gonna bomb.

I laughed out loud when Margaret revealed the "secret".
I enjoyed the musical up until that point... then I lost interest. I really didn't like it at all, much of Clara's dialogue was way too developed to be like that of a 10 year old, even too much for a 15 year old.

mejusthavingfun: Elizabeth Spencer lived in Italy for years. She's not just a tourist. Keep in mind that for the most part it's from the POV of Margaret, who is a tourist. Of course it would have tourist-y things in it. The novella has gorgeous writing, though.
Anyway, I stand by what I said about the movie. I've read the book hundreds of times and watched the movie hoping it would be good; heck, I even taped it. But I was bitterly disappointed. They just took too many weird departures from the novel (what was up with Noel just randomly deciding to go over to Italy? Or Clara eating flowers at her wedding?)
I didn't know that Adam Guettel talked to a head trauma specialist for research. That's really cool!

When Margaret says "the doctors told us her mental and emotional capacities would not develop normally," I didn't take that to mean they would never develop -- it's obvious she's progressed beyond the abilities of a ten-year-old.

"I didn't really like Piazza on TV. If everyone's saying that you need to be in the theater to get the full experience, then the TV recording really did not do it justice at all."
First off I'll say that I didn't really like the show. When I saw it in the theater, the song "Dividing Day" stayed in my mind. Unfortunately, on the tv, the song seemed to fall flat.

Getting kicked in the head by a pony? Plausible.
What's not plausible is that a person who, as the result of said kick, has a childlike mentality and stunted intellect (both said by the mother character, in other words of course) would act so sexually assertive (see hotel room scene w/Fabrizio) and be able to convert to Catholicism in Latin!!!
That was my problem with Piazza. Clara NEVER seemed "slow" in any way. A little innocent perhaps, but there's a big difference. Lots of well-bred young ladies in the 50s were innocent. She's supposed to have mental impairment, and I never saw evidence of it.
This is based on original Bway production; I didn't see PBS version.

The musical tries to make it seem like Clara's not mentally challenged so much as sheltered. She's never been given the chance to blossom.
The novella states that Clara has recently begun to mature sexually. The reason they have to go to Italy is because she ran and threw her arms around the grocery boy. Of course, it doesn't have a near-sex scene between her and Fabrizio.

Why is that a reason to go to Italy?

Posted: 6/20/06 at 4:37pmBecause it worried Margaret and they probably wanted her to get away. In the book, whenever something bad or embarassing happens to Clara due to her condition, the response is to run away from it. When Margaret enrolls her in school while Noel is away, for instance, and things go horribly, after they pull her out they send her away to stay with relatives for a while and Margaret goes on vacation to some resort. Look at how Margaret's initial response to the Fabrizio situation was to just pack up for Rome.

Heh. Nope. I think I would do some pretty drastic things to be able to hear/see that. I'm SURE it would sound WONDERFUL!

LIzzieCurry, There’s really no need to be rude. I didn't say weird that much. If it means that much to you, next time I use a thesaurus…but for now… get over it.
Neddyfrank2, I did not really understand why you were being so rude as well. It’s a show that I saw that I personally thought was odd despite it’s wonderful music.
Shows like Sweeney Todd and Wicked are like horror stories and fairy tales. The light in the piazza is a supposed normal love story… at least that what seemed like since the start of it. Being kicked by a pony seemed like an implausible idea to be because I couldn’t imagine renting a pony for my birthday party and I think they could have found a better reason for her disability. Being kicked in the head by a pony is almost comical when not actually witnessed. I don’t know why this small comment affected and offended so many people but due to the fact that it was just a matter of opinion, some people of this thread should really cool it and stop bringing other people down.
Yankeefan – not funny…
I agreed with everything frontrow said.
