Pity The Child

Posted: 7/31/04 at 5:41pmThis ass-kicker from Chess has long been one of my favorite songs, and I'm foolishly attempting to climb the mountain and sing it for a local theatre fund raiser. I've been listening to a few recordings and wanted to know if anyone here attended either the recent Chess concert where Adam Pascal was "Freddie" or the 1998 BCEFA concert where it was (my hero) Brian D'Arcy James. I'm curious how these 2 differently amazing singers tackled it. Also, which rendition out of all Chess recordings is your favorite?

Pity The Child has to be one of my all time faves.
A very good recording of Chess is the full Danish Cast Recording (sung in English) where Zubin Varla plays a 'very interesting' Freddie. I loved him on the Original London Cast Recording for JCS but I'm not convinced about his Freddie. Great recording though.
I love Adam Pascal anyway and I am trying not to be biased here (VERY difficult) but his Pity The Child kicked a**!!! :)
He hit these high notes perfectly and in my opinion (I know others might not agree) he was definitely at his best that night.
Let me know if you haven't heard his PTC and I will PM it to you.

His version is stunning. I did not know that he had that kind of ability. Those high notes... wow. Wow.

Posted: 7/31/04 at 8:18pmPITY THE CHILD is certainly one of the songs that I really like from the show. I do have the concept album - and I agree that Murray Head does a good job with it.

This song has one of my all-time favorite lyrics :
Pity instead the careless mother
What she missed
what she lost
when she let me go

I listened to Pity the Child every night when I used to borrow the OBC recording of Chess from a friend of mine. It's heartbreaking. I still listen to that song often and it reminds me of MY past---my stepfather was very cruel to me. And my mother divorced my stepdad and moved to a new house. And happily, I never saw my stepfather again. That's why the musical theater means so much to me--I got into the theater three months after we moved to my grandmother's house.
It's unbelievable that Freddie went through that crap--abusive parents. I love that song. It's so heartbreaking! *bawls*

I cried when I listened to this song. And I do not cry easily. That may have been because I was already kinda down, but still. It's a very powerful piece of music.
I'm sorry to hear that, Meg. I'm glad things got better for you and you turned to theatre and not something abusive like so many people.

Good response to that um... comment, Undiscovered. Better than I could've done.
Anyway, I FINALLY got to hear my Adam sing Pity The Child, and it was GODLY. I don't know how he hits those notes, but it left me stunned.
