Just a warning for those who might be thinking about going to see this show: it is a complete abominable bore, and I would hate all of you to be subject to it. Just a warning...it will make your brain ooze out of your ears.
On the other hand, has anyone else seen this yet? Thoughts?
Awww, I was actually gonna try and catch that, just for something different. Care to elaorate on your review?
I honestly don't know any of the performers names, except for Hollie Howard (Hairspray, Mamma Mia.) She was the most recent Penny in HAIRSPRAY - and she is the only saving grace of this show - she's spectacular. But, like someone like Kristin Chenoweth, she's very a much a one-trick-pony - atleast thusfar. Regardless, her performance is fantastic.
The lead - who was in the ensemble of GOOD VIBRATIONS - is fine in the acting department, but needs some vocal work. She's almost always flat. The rest of the cast is fine, except for another supporting girl who couldn't act her way out of a bag - but, she assumed the role (she was the understudy) about 2 weeks ago.
The set and lighting is cute and retro-60's, and the music is decent and catchy for a musical festival submission - NOT FOR A FULL-LENGTH musical. And the lyrics and book is among the worst I have ever heard for anything ever written - EVER. Very very very amateur and intolerable. Seriously, don't waste your time. Go see YANK!
I'm glad you had nice things to say about Hollie Howard! Shes a doll! and a talented woman! Can't wait to see her in it. :)
I'm crazy about her performance. I want to marry her!

why do you hate this so much? your reasons are cheap and make you sound like you are saying this to spite the production.

How was the direction, lighting, sound, orchestra, set, costumes, etc? Updated On: 9/19/05 at 09:13 AM
I hate it so much because it's a piece of crap. That's the only reason - I have nothing against anyone in the show.
The direction is misguided, weak, and very community theatre. The lighting is amateur at some points, and dazzling at others - very lazy work. The sound is fine, for what it is. The "orchestra" sounds decent...they use a keyboard and a piano, and the keyboard uses different sounds, like "flute" or "clarinet," but it just sounds cheap. The set is very cute and appropriate, same for the costumes.
I read Suzy Conn's blog until I started realizing that I disagree with most of her opinions (she thinks Piazza's score is dull) and all her news was just cut and pasted from Playbill Online. But if you want the inside scoop....
Yet another misuse of the term "Broadway Baby"- listen to the original song; a Broadway Baby is very new to Broadway, not someone who has been on Broadway since they were a baby or something. This annoys me whenever I see it. It's a cute blog title, though.

This show gave me a headache. I mean, it wasn't like it had a "rock" score with a "rock" band that *had* to be amplified. So why did the producers or director or whoever feel the need to mic and blast out (in a tiny 100 seat theatre no less) a piano, drums and a bunch of girls with more ear-piercing belts than ten Alice Ripleys and a leading man who sings in the upper most crevices of his nasal passages? It was such an unpleasant listening experience. My ears still haven't recovered.
You are being incredibly unfair. This show is AMAZING. I saw it Saturday night and it got a standing ovation...I haven't seen many other Festival shows that generate that kind of audience reaction.
The author is pretty clear about where the show is coming from...it's about, by, and for the '60s, and I think it does a remarkable job of evoking that time, but with a good message.
The show is amazing? Come now - you're being a tad dramatic with your terminology. The lyrics and the book are absolutely horrendous - I will be happy to provide you with some great examples of the lyrics, if you choose not to believe me.
Saturday, huh? Was that the night in "Then/Now" that Faith forgot the words and sang "Blah blah blah blah" for a few lines? That was a great time.
