Has anyone ever seen a play version of a musical? One time I remember I saw a play version of Phantom of the Opera. Of course, it was not even close to being as excellent as the musical.

There was a really bad Musical some years back called "Angel" from the Play "Look Homeward Angel". "Purlie Victorious" gave us the musical "Purlie". The musical "Raisin" came from "A Raisin In The Sun". etc. etc. etc.

I think the original post was asking about shows that were musicals FIRST, then non-musical plays.

There are non-musical versions of several musicals, including ANNIE GET YOUR GUN, GIRL CRAZY and others, offered through Dramatic Publishing Company. They ae geared toward high school groups, and are pretty lame. I doubt they have ever been done professionally.

Then of course, there are musicals that were made into movies, with all the songs cut out. FANNY and IRMA LA DOUCE are two examples. The melodies of the songs were used in the background, but there was no singing.
