Pianolin717, at first i agreed cuz i found it to be boring. Then i went back and looked at it again and after reilizing how much character work could be done and how rich the text could be given a good cast and director i found it to be much more effective.

PILLOWMAN - hands down. By far one of my favorite plays to read.

I second Yankeefan007's suggestions of PILLOWMAN and THE GOAT actually....

I agree with so many already mentioned - I'll add a few classics

The Three Sisters
Tartuffe
Tis Pity She's a Whore (everyone needs one blood tragedy)
The Caretaker
The Importance of Being Earnest
All Over

I would also add any plays by Tom Stoppard, Lanford Wilson, David Mamet,Sam Shepard, Terrance McNally

For gay plays:
Torch Song Trilogy
The Normal Heart
Love, Valour , Compassion

AGH! It's so hard for me to choose. Quick list:

Any and all Shakespeare. My top two are Macbeth and The Winter's Tale.

'Tis Pity She's a Whore by John Ford.

A Doll's House by Ibsen, because it changed theatre as we know it.

Lady Windermere's Fan by Wilde, because it was considered super scandalous in its day.

The Vortex and Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward.

Rock n' Roll and Arcadia by Tom Stoppard, because both made me laugh out loud.

The Seafarer, Shining City, and The Weir by Conor McPherson.

The Pillowman and The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh.

No Exit by Sartre.

The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry.

The History Boys by Alan Bennett.

And, of course, anything Arthur Miller, Eugene O'Neil, Sam Shepard, David Mamet, Edward Albee (especially The Goat), and Tennessee Williams.

The Crucible (Miller)
All My Sons (Miller)
Streetcar Named Desire (Williams)
The Glass Menagerie (Williams)
Waiting for Godot (Beckett)
Play About A Baby (Albee)
Arcadia (Stoppard)
Rosencratz and Guildenstern are Dead (Stoppard)
King Lear (Shakespeare)
Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare)

Those are just off the top of my head. I know some of them have been listed already, but they're only being repeated because they're that good!
