Please Help!

Im going down to NY with a class of 20, around the ages 16-18. We are seeing two plays, one being Rent, the other is still up in the air. (Actually its been chosen, but I think its the wrong choice and I want your opinion) on what do you think this age group will enjoy better, The plays are

Phantom of the Opera
or
Hairspray

What do you think this group would get more enjoyment out of and why? PLEASE HELP I think im going to show this thread to the teacher.

re: Please Help!

Sometimes availability for group tickets plays into the decision.

re: Please Help!

I thought PHANTOM was better than HAIRSPRAY, but that's just me. For fun, go to Hairspray. For great theatre, go to Phantom.

re: Please Help!

Well, I'll start this off by saying that I love Hairspray and Phantom of the Opera equally. I honestly can't choose which one I like better. That being said, I'd say definitely Hairspray for a group of high school kids. That's what I'd rather see if I were to go with a group like that. It would be so much fun!

re: Please Help!

I saw both and loved both but Hairspray was the funnest, most amazing experience I've had in a theatre. So HAIRSPRAY! Especially for the age group... not all people in that age group can appreciate something as serious as Phantom whereas Hairspray is a RIOT!
Am I cut out to spend my time this way?

re: Please Help!

Here's a review by a friend who went to see The Phantom Of The Opera with the wonderful man who would soon become her husband!

Don't know when you're planning on taking the students, but the Halloween season seems like a VERY fitting time for voting for the phantom.

Oh yes! And how I found you here--through a search--brings up another wonderful play for a variety of audiences. You'd used the phrase "in the air" in your inquiry, and I was looking for writings about a friend's play of that title.

If he and his group can get enough paying customers, he would love to see it run all the way through December 3, but this best-kept secret is going to have to become a little less secret before this could happen.

That is, unless I win big in Powerball and turn into an angel! LOL

So, I hope you'll tell people that such a play is going on at this time.

It's called:

In The Air

and the playwright is:

Paul Enger

If you or anyone you know happen to go to see it, please drop me a line and let me know what you think.

Hope your students enjoy NYC.

I don't know if this is still true or not, but did you now that, at one time, members of the cast of All My Children actually left the ABC building (a different one that has been torn down) just like people leave their jobs from anywhere, and that they're really great about stopping to chat, sign autographs, and pose for pictures?

This was how it was back in 1984 when my dad and I were in NYC and a few months later in 1985 when both of my folks and I were in the area.

Have Fun!

re: Please Help!

Normally, I'd vote for Hairspray. BUT people know Phantom, and people are much more inclined to like what they know. Phantom and Hairspray have both come to Atlanta fairly recently. But so many more people I know went to see Phantom because they knew it. So if they are not really theatre people, I'd say go with that. But Hairspray is way fun so...

re: Please Help!

I think overall, Hairspray would be the more "peppy" have fun type of show for your age group... I'm in that same age group, and I honestly think students would enjoy Hairspray more. From my perspective, though, I would want to see Phantom because it's great theatre... not saying that Hairspray isn't, but POTO is a classic. I also think RENT and Hairspray would match up better than RENT and POTO.

re: Please Help!

I both loved both shows...so you will enjoy whatever you end up seeing, but if you are looking for a fun night out where u r clapping your hands, laughing nd singing to the beat go and see HAIRSPRAY!! You'll LOVE it! But if you are looking for a beautiful/great show that is more series ...than see Phantom. They are both GREAT, but totally opposite

re: Please Help!

Hairspray.
I went on a similar trip my senior year of high school, and all of us students got to choose every show we saw except one that our teacher chose, which was Hairspray--and everybody loved it!

re: Please Help!

I think Hairspray would be slightly more accessible to the crowd you're speaking of, DefyingEDCT. POTO is sung through, and thus is harder to understand if you're not familiar with the story or if the characters do not have impeccable diction. Plus, you're essentially seeing a sung through show with RENT (though there are many speaking parts, its structured more like an opera) so why not something different? Hairspray has a great score that will keep the toes tapping, and the dialogue is very funny as well. In short, my two cents: Hairspray re: Please Help!
