as a non-local, i can only suggest touristy activities. how about a meal at tavern on the green? (I heard the food's mediocre but the setting is beautiful.) and of course your activity has to be a show (look what message board you're on!).

As a local i can say that something romantic is to go up the Empire State Building.

Its so nice up their and the view is awesome (duh!)

Although with the rain and whether - it might not be a great idea - especially if there are signs that say 0 - little visibility. If you do go, sweatshirts and hoods - even if its warm - its windy up there.

A show, of course.

Many different cultural restaurants if your into that.

What are your interests? NYC caters to them all!

Two very romantic things I did with a college flame were:

-Brooklyn Bridge at night.
-Dinner at The View (at the top of the Marriott Marquis on 46th Street)

It was amazing.

If you're looking for a lower-key romantic dinner, I'd go with:

Malatesta Trattoria on Christopher St- at night, lit by candles, it truly feels as though you're in Florence (and I've lived in Florence). It's the best Italian food I've had outside of Italy, and the tiramisu is phenomenal. It's also REALLY reasonably priced.

Tartine on W. 4th at W. 11th- tiny little French bistro with delicious homestyle country-French dishes. It's also BYOB so you can bring your favourite bottle of wine. Amazing pastries.

These places are both in the heart of the West Village, which in itself is the most romantic part of the city in my opinion.

A very nice, intimate museum experience is the Frick Collection at 70th and 5th. It is a perserved residence and Mr. Frick collected wonderful pieces. A wonderful way to pass an hour or so and you won't feel overwhelmed or get "museum fatigue" as can happen at the Met and other large museums.

The Frick is a great idea. You might try the Cloisters as well. If you like Chinese food, dim sum is always fun (though I can't recommend anywhere specific). And don't forget just walking around and looking at stuff. I'm probably just a country mouse who is overawed by the density of things, but I think it's always enjoyable and often surprising just to explore (and I guess I don't look like a hick because people always ask me for directions).

Have a happy and romantic time!

My all time favorite cafe is Cafe Lalo at W83rd and Amsterdam, it can get a little pricey but its well worth it, if you can, don't go at "prime" hours and you won't hafta wait for a table! Have fun!

i agree 100% with nycdncr...mariott restaurant and the bridge are amazing!!

I'd also say a nice picnic in central park is uniquely new york. and very romatic if done correctly.

Sitting on the pier at night can be nice, too.

If you are into museums and theatre, I always recommend the Museum of the City of New York on Fifth Avenue at 104th Street. They have a great collection of Broadway memorabilia - costumes, set models, etc. It's a short walk from the Guggenheim Museum, if you want to tie them together.
