I have an audition coming up for Runaways by Elizabeth Swados and I need a pop/rock song for it. As a theatre kid, I know so few non-theatre songs, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any good songs! I'm 14 and a mezzo if that helps. Thanks so so much!

Did the audition notice specify that it NOT be a song from a musical.  If it didn't, then I'd still with a theatre song that shows off your talents AND helps the director to see you in their show.  There are plenty of contemporary musical songs that are more pop/rock.  But after listening to a bit of the Runaways cast recording, there's a big mix of music there.  There is a lot of Brazilian / Latin type music in the cast recording.  You might want to think about Breathe from In the Heights.  Also, there are a number of terrific songs from 13 the Musical; including What it Means to Be a Friend.  Pulled from the Addams Family?  Superboy and the Invisible Girl from Next to Normal?  Good luck.

Much harder task.  How about this.  The show was originally produced in 1978-79.  Check out some of the female rock / pop acts that were popular during that time frame.  There weren't many women singing rock during those year.  Most were doing more disco / country southern rock.  Below are a few that might fit more into the rock genre of the era.  Listen to their songs / libraries on youtube.

You've got some classics like Blondie (Debby Harry) and their song Heart of Glass.  Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks were very popular.  Definitely check out Heart's song Heartless.

If you're ok with songs that aren't originally sung by women, check out some Queen from 78-79.  Freddie Mercury sang as high as many women and the songs are awesome.

Good luck!
