Margo, did you see this show?
I saw it last night, and it's one of those cases where I think the critics were basically right.
I love Nixon. But she was very mis-matched in this role.
However, I think it's a terrific play. And a rather good production. If you haven't seen any production of the play, I recommend it. It's a fascinating piece of theatre. And while Nixon doesn't make the best Brodie ever, she's not bad. And neither is the rest of the piece.

While the production itself is a farce, it is great to see it on the stage. The main problem is many of the actors seem to be battling several very different accents and while Nixon might not have the gravitas as an actress to access the darker side of Brodie, the real crime here is she is hampered by simply dreadful, non-existent direction. How could Elliot stage the climax with Brodie sitting upstage and Sandy hovering over her? The whole play leads to this moment and it is totally undermined. It could have been so much better.
natasha richardson or kate burton probably would have been better casting choices for brodie but i did find cynthia nixon's performance fascinating...i just think if she had mastered the accent it would have been less distracting - at least for me. it sounded like jean brodie meets sophie's choice.
