Toronto is also at the top of the list for the big touring shows, with at least three companies in Toronto here bringing all the big ones in... off the top of my head in the past year we had MAMMA MIA! for two months, LEGALLY BLONDE for 4 weeks, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN for 4 weeks, SOUTH PACIFIC for 5 weeks, JERSEY BOYS for 2 years, BANANA SHPEEL for 4 weeks... in the coming year we are getting BILLY ELLIOT for 6 months, THE SECRET GARDEN for 4 weeks, FORUM for 4 weeks, THE LION KING for 4 weeks...
If you are in Toronto this weekend, you can see PRISCILLA, WICKED (which launched its tour here in 2005), and ROCK OF AGES.
At its musical theatre peak in the mid-90s, you could have seen in one weekend MISS SAIGON, CRAZY FOR YOU, PHANTOM, SHOW BOAT and THE WHO'S TOMMY - all sit-down productions and not tours.
To say we don't get big theatre is completely erroneous, and audiences here demand good theatre especially when exposed to so much.
Also, within two hours driving distance are North America's largest and finest classical theatre companies - the Stratford (#1) and Shaw (#2) Festivals. Christopher Plummer just did TEMPEST at Stratford and Brian Dennehy did the Broadway-bound KRAPP'S LAST TAPE there two seasons ago.
So we're more than exposed to big shows and first-rate productions here in Toronto.
