Perhaps they think it will sell better with well-known songs. The big "new" musicals have not done well down there lately - not even THE PRODUCERS.

And who knows if they'll add songs - a lot could happen - it's early yet.

Thats because most people would rather spend there money going to a sports event than the theatre, cause really we don't have a goverment that like to spend money on the arts.

Just look at bracks in Victoria nearly 100 million on upgrading sports overs, but no money for arts.

Sad.

I'm with you Rosscoe! Bracks has however set up another state run opera company - just what we weren't crying out for. Like opera here in Victoria isn't already well served by Opera Australia and their regional arm, Chamber Made and two semi professional outfits Melbourne Opera and Melbourne City Opera companies. How many opera's are there anyway? They all seem to do the same operas year in and year out.

My favorite line is "Just what we need. . . A Cock, in a Frock, on a Rock". Still makes me laugh. I was hoping one of my drag queen friends would go hiking with us one day just so I could us it. haha

The Victoria State Opera should never have been dismantled, the productions they did where way better than most of Opera Australia.

How long has it been since the 3 theatres ( comedy, her maj, princess ) had shows in them running at the same time?

But then again producers need to go back to the way of old ( not ever show will be cats, phantom or les mis ) 3 months in Melbourne, 3 months in sydney, 8 weeks in all the other capitals before returning to do another season if demand is there.

But then again New York producers also need to respect that fact that we are a country of only 22 million people. paying 10/15 million for the rights ( and production costs ) to put shows on is just doomed for failure.

Very good point at the end there, rosscoe. Perhaps a musical originating in Australia has more of a chance as it's not starting out with that deficit.

sounds like a big drag show......and since we're opening a huge new drag-dinner club-entertainment center venue here, I'll save the money and not go to Australia.....

Elphaba, hopefully it will be a hit there and make its way to New York. With any luck you can see it without the trip across the world.

And with any luck, the leads will be intact.

well, if there are no new songs, made for the show......I'm not sure I'd be interested. The movie was fabulous.....they need to make this fabulous.......and to me that means songs written for it......

But the movie was fabulous in part because of those songs. Why change them?

And Tony Sheldon is playing Bernadette - THAT is fabulous.

The first show i saw Tony in was "Torch Song Trilogy" at Her Maj in i think it was the very early eighties, must have been only 10 or 11 at the time.

I have not had the fortune to see him live - I'm hoping that PRISCILLA brings him to Broadway. I have read about him, heard from others who have seen him, and heard both him and his mother on audio recordings. I'm a huge Lamond fan.

rosscoe, TORCH SONG played at the Universal Theatre in Fitzroy and later at the National Theatre, St Kilda. I think you probably saw it at the National.

It's been ages since I've seen the film and I don't know the character's names, but the character played by Terence Stamp in the film demands a character song.

I don't remember who said it, but one songwriter said that he puts a song in a show that he's writing when he imagines that if it were a film that the character would get a close-up.

Imagine what the film Priscilla would be like if there weren't any closeups in it...

Anything that means more stage time for Sheldon is fine with me.

Saw the show again last week and it is in fine form. It has been receiving standing ovations every night, with no hesitation. The curtain call lasted FOREVER! The costume design blows the audience away and is enough to make up for some weaker book moments. Although re-writes still happen most nights.

Elton John was in the audience several weeks ago and is apparently very keen to bring the show to broadway and the West End. Sooner then some would expect it seems...

Tony Sheldon was fabulous. Such a grounded, hilarious performance. Truly brilliant.

Nick Hardcastle was still in for Daniel Scott (god only knows when he is going to return...lots of controversy).

Get along to see it if you can - it's a LOT of fun. Was definitely worth the trip.

"...But Kungurtseva reels off multiple fouettes and the tape is stopped so she can take a bow. The Jester, an abomination introduced to Swan Lake in Soviet times, extorts applause from the audience. The cuts don't help the storytelling, the production is bare bones and they go for the '50s-style happy ending. The audience cheers like mad at the end. It's the Russian ballet, after all..."
