Problems with Rent preview

I figured it's been talked about before, but lord knows you can't keep up with Rent or Wicked posts for too long on this site...anywho...I can't imagine not being a theatre geek or a Renthead and watching the Rent Trailer....I just caught it on FX (currently watching nip/tuck)....They show nothing...There's like one LINE in the entire thing...The rest is just a bunch of walking, dancing, bike riding, NYC shots....If this is supposed to entice an audience, I think the only people coming will be the lil teenie boppers...(but that's only if you can get them away from the 2 for 1 sale at Limited TOO)

Yeah - I love Nip/Tuck so brillantly written and directed. I mean, a women fused to her couch - cmon. But yeah, i was left kinda unfulfilled with it. Seasons of Love isn't even the best the song in the show, but anyways, can't wait for the film.

re: Problems with Rent preview

Well I don't want you Rentheads getting the impression I'm against the film. I'm all for it. I want it to succeed because that'll boost ticket sales (a la CHICAGO) and get people to come to Broadway! It's just that...yeah, it does seem really empty....The best thing I can compare it to is like watching a musical trailer for Vanilla Sky...I mean, you watch the trailer and its like...."what WAS that?"

re: Problems with Rent preview

I know what you mean.

Unless you were a Renthead, the first trailer told you absolutely nothing. Pretty pictures over a pretty song.

Second trailer, some talking, more pretty pictures over a pretty song.

Nothing about the plot or the story. Not that I didn't love both of the trailers, but I knew what was going on. If they want to get more people to come, they should make a trailer that actually tells people what it's about, that it's not just pretty pictures over pretty songs.

Did that make sense?

re: Problems with Rent preview

I happen to like the trailer a lot, but I can see how some wouldn't. The marketing people have a problem, though. Even though the movie has more dialog than the show, that still doesn't make for very much, and showing mostly dialog might mislead people as to the extent that this *is* a musical. Besides, the plot is really driven by the songs. Should they edit together snippets of a bunch of songs? I really don't like that idea either. Which pretty much leaves what they ended up doing.

re: Problems with Rent preview

well the one that aired on access hollywood sort of explained it in the words that popped up "struggle, ambition, love" and the lyrics can speak for themselves at times....i dont know, this is just me here.

re: Problems with Rent preview

Well, really, you can't really tell about the plot of Rent without spoiling. You can say its the story of 8 friends/lovers over the course of a year... but that's about it.

re: Problems with Rent preview

hardly, timote...

Thats like saying, I don't think james cameron said anything like " Well, we can't show the Titanic sinking, because it would spoil it...Let's just use a lot of vague shots and confuse the people who don't know the story.."

re: Problems with Rent preview

I have to agree, while I do love the trailers and the idea of the movie in general, I have a feeling its largely due to the fact that I'm a very big fan of the show previously and therefore know what's going on and why etc. If I were compeletly oblivious to RENT before seeing that trailer, I'd be quite confused over it probably and to what the point of it was. As stated before, pretty pictures over a very pretty song but that's about all that'd register. I do think it would have been more successful had they added some dialogue and plot detailing to the trailers, or at least the later ones to give the audience something to really sink their teeth into and absorb. Anyways that's just my two cents on the matter.

re: Problems with Rent preview

The trailer they showed during Nip/Tuck did try to explain it a little bit more. Though, already having a background on the show, I guess I could understand it more. Its like when I went w/ my brother to see Phantom and within like 5mins of the movie he was like "is this a musical?" I guess you wouldn't know, cause they don't really tell you its a musical.

Also, what does Idina say in the preview? Something like "blah blah blah...something about friends."

RentBoy86, im not sure if that question about idina is sarcasm or not, but its late so ill bite re: Problems with Rent preview
"you always said how lucky you were that we were all friends, but it was us baby who were the lucky ones"

like i said i dont know if that was sarcasm or not based on your user name, you could tell me gullabe was written on the ceiling and id prolly look up.

I couldn't disagree more - - why would teenie boppers want to see a movie full of 35+ year olds? On that basis, I think the audience will be mostly rentheads.

re: Problems with Rent preview

i still think these are all teasers, we're still 2 months off, i think these are to jog people's memories with the songs and then later there might be stuff with more substance

re: Problems with Rent preview

35+ year olds? I believe the only cast member over 35 when they shot was Jesse L Martin, all of 36.

re: Problems with Rent preview

No, YankeeFan, it was a real question. I really wanted to know what she says. Who's it directed to? I've only seen the show once, and that was 3 - 4 years ago, so i don't remember specifics. Is that from the show? I always thought she said "maybe." lol.

re: Problems with Rent preview

I agree with timote316, there's not much you can explain about the plotline without giving away too much. I mean, you mention half the people have AIDS and then everyone can assume at least one person dies. The Titanic sinking is historical fact, so it's definitely not comparable.

Do you people never see movie trailers? The first ones that they show months before the movie comes out aren't supposed to tell you anything. The good previews never do tell you anything so that you'll go see the movie. I hate when you can tell exactly what happens in a movie and how it ends just from the 30 TV commercial.

If you're going to complain, I would like to know what you would have done differently that would have been so much better than what the trained professionals have offered. You know, mention the plotline of the movie, but not revealing enough that it's not worth the $10 movie ticket because you can guess the ending.

ooh, ok rentboy. in that case
*spoiler to all who havent seen it!!*

maureen (idina) is giving a eulogy at angels funeral. she was talking to/about angel. angel was the sweetest, most selfless out of the group, so he apparently always said he was so lucky he was their friend. but in fact, maureen was saying "it was us baby who were the lucky ones" any other questions feel free to PM me. re: Problems with Rent preview

re: Problems with Rent preview

well i'll say this...when i went to see the show i had no idea what it was going to be about because everyone kept telling me it was 'about people coping with AIDS'

'And the story in THAT is...?'

Then i saw it and realized that it was fantastic. I'm guessing marketing is kind of doing the same thing with the movie that they did with the show.

Which is kind of a bad thing...but then...there isn't much of a BASIC storyline to this show...at least i didn't think so....you can't really explain the storyline of 'rent' in a 20 second trailer...

re: Problems with Rent preview

If you go to the Sony Pictures website there are two Rent trailers. The second full trailer has some speaking in it. There are words projected that explain a bit what it's about with No Day But Today playing. Then the announcer guy says that it's a musical.
