The New York Post reports that the Mel Brooks film, originally scheduled to shoot in Canada, has changed its locale due to a special tax incentive, part of a bill recently signed by Governor Pataki...

Posted: 9/29/04 at 1:43pmGreat news. Apparently other films are lining up to shoot in the new studio after "The Producers" as well. It would great if this became a popular and viable film facility -- I'd love to see several more studios open here. If more big budget films and tv shows were shot here in New York, perhaps we wouldn't lose so many of our talented stage actors to Hollywood forever.

Posted: 9/29/04 at 3:30pmThat's what I was encouraging. The new studio is in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Why not use some of the other abandoned pier areas, navy yards, factories and undeveloped waterfront area in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx (as well as Jersey) and covert them into film facilities and studios. We have the space and imagine the jobs and general economic boom it could potentially mean for the city (as well as keeping stage actors here in NYC where they belong). It certainly beats building power plants on those same sites, which some have proposed which could be potentially very dangerous given the proximity those areas have to huge population centers.

As a former New Jersey resident, I can't say that the occassional filmings of The Sopranos in my area were much fun. One time I got dirty looks from a crew member for daring to walk to my othodontist's office while they were shooting something in the other direction across the street.
Sound stages, on the other hand, sound like a good idea, and Margo makes an excellent point about how they'll allow more stage actors to stay in the area. Kind of like Law & Order. :P

The Stroman interview a month or two ago did say they were planning to do this in Brooklyn and the tax incentives were just the thing to get it to happen.
However, since TP will be the first film to shoot there, I hope they don't have ceiling fans falling on their heads, an absence of hot water...etc.
You know how it is being the first one to occupy a commercial building :)
