Hi all...I'm looking into the professional theatre scene in Austin or San Antonio, Texas. Does anyone know where I can find a list of theatres? Or does anyone have info on this?
Thanks...and yes, I know it's dreaded Bush country but San Antonio and Austin are the safe zones in Texas (the only ones...I think)
i can only think of one regional producing theater (as opposed to mainly tour road house organizations) in those two cities...Zach Scott Theater in Austin.

Austin also does a big outdoor musical every yr - mostly non-eq w/ the occaisional guest artist. I can't remember the proper name for it.
Here you go http://www.theatreport.com/
This is a sight for both professional and non professional theatres.
I currently live in Houston and have lived in Austin.
Professional Houston theaters
The Alley (Tony award best regional theater)

Theater Under the Stars (musicals)

Stages repertory theater

Theater Lab Houston (non equity)

In Austin try The Zachary Scott Theater. This is actually a venue that houses or hosts different companies.
I hope this helps
hey Franzia, Houston here too. i did not list our places as the post asked for San Antonio and Austin specifically. What i've seen (and read about) at Zach Scott makes it worth investigating. Wish i could get to Austin more.

When you use the term professional do you mean equity or just something above the level of community theatre? I don't mean to be insulting but some people speak of professional theatre as anything where you get paid a little money or where the troupe is established and performs on an annual basis like regional or rep companies.
The theatreport site is one of the better sites for this kind of research. Here's a link you may also find helpful. Houston is probably the most active theatre town in Texas but if you look you can find groups in other cities as well.

You guys are the best...I'm just toying with the idea of moving to the Austin/San Antonio area and would like to continue my acting career. I will check out those sites!
Is there something/one compelling you to go to one of those two cities? As far as theatre cities go, I think there are better options.
David, a Dallasite
i'd agree that Dallas or Houston has better opportunities professionally, but i can see where the SA/AUS quality of life (and for Austin, the music and film scene) would have their attractions as well. i visited San Antonio for the first time within the last year and was really impressed...though it did seem at first glance as a little culturally backwards in performing arts. The presence of UT at Austin makes for a very interesting lifestyle, however...
Good points, Tx.

Austin has a very hot new music scene, particularly American rock and blues.
Houston is NOT a commute to the Austin/S'Antone area. it MIGHT be possible to commute between Austin and S'Antone however. but not entirely pleasant.

Recent revival. It ran for a couple years a while back, as I recall.
