Public Service Announcement

The film version of TWHM, Hello Dolly! will be broadcast on The Fox Movie Channel on Wednesday, October 1 at 2:00 PM.

This Broadway to Hollywood transistion is one of the most faithful put to film and features the definitive Dolly, Barbra Streisand. Masterfully directed by none other than Gene Kelly, this musical, considered by many film historians to be the last of the great MGM musicals due to the many former MGM talents involved, is guaranteed to put a smile on your lips! Don't miss it!!!

Albin, why did you even bother posting this when you know pefectly well that any sane and sophisticated person on this board already owns the re-mastered DVD!

Hello, Dolly! can't be one of the last great MGM movie musicals, due to the fact it was made by 20th Century Fox.

As much as I love the movie, I would hardly say that it was faithfully transitioned to screen. Several songs cut, songs added and major plot differences.

re: re: re: Public Service Announcement

A big problem with the film was that it was filmed in Fox's DeLuxe Color process, which fades to orange over time. It's not nearly as rich or stable like good old IB Technicolor, as anyone who saw the restored FUNNY GIRL can see.

Amy,

anyone who is a fan of the film knows that it was made by 20th Century Fox. Many affectionately refer to the film as the last great MGM musical becuase of all the former MGM talent that was involved.

I enjoy Barbra very much but I have a feeling that some people will not agree with you Albin about her being the definitive.

re: re: re: re: Public Service Announcement

I remember when it was announced the Barbra Streisand would be starring in HELLO, DOLLY. Yes, I am of a certain age. And I remember feeling very disappointed.

Now, I can't for the life of me think who else was considered. Who was around then? I know that Ginger Rogers thought she had a shot at it - but boy howdy, who else? Doris Day? Mitzi Gaynor? Shirley MacClaine? Barbra is looking better and better!

I guess I just thought Ms Streisand was too young. I didn't see the movie during its Roadshow First Run engagement, but later on, probably at the drive-in. And now on DVD, it seems okay. The soundtrack album is fun to listen to, and the movie is an okay watch...but not a MUST SEE. Ms Streisand does a nice job and hits most of the acting marks and of course ALL the singing! I have a feeling she didn't get a lot of help from Mr Kelly. Only MHO of course.

re: Public Service Announcement

i love the film of Hello Dolly despite some flaws. Though woefully miscast, Streisand does indeed glow like a great big star.

An Oscar nominee for best picture, Hello Dolly! is a delightful entertainment. A film adaption of one of Broadway's greatest works, it should be seen by anyone seriously interested in the musical as a form.

You too will likely find yourself smiling from beginning to end. I wish Carol Channing had starred in the film and suspect she would have gotten at least an Oscar nomination. However, the film is still a delightful bonbon of a treat:)

WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT??????????

"The Definitive Dolly Levi"

Albin, you have just proven to me--and everyone else in Cyberspace that you are on the wrong medication!!!!!!!!!!!

The movie is a piece of crap. It captures neither the ebullience of the stage production nor the INTENT of it. Did Gene Kelly ever bother to realize there is a very significant reason why on stage Dolly wore a RED gown when she returns to the Harmonia Gardens??? Maybe he (or the costume designer) had never paid attention to their English teachers when the subject of color symbolism was discussed.

That Streisand Woman is too young for the role and her performance is all over the place--Jewish here, Mae West there, Petula Clark in other spots. However she is NOT Dolly Levi. Also, there is absolutely no chemistry between Streisand and Walter Matthau--probably because he couldn't stand her guts and it showed on film.

The production values are all wrong. How could a widow like Irene Molloy afford a hat shop that features a rococo ceiling?
And didn't anyone realize that the 14th Street Parade wasn't the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? Good Lord, even the parades in Disney World are shorter!!!!! The parade is an analogy of Dolly's rejoining the human race--she doesn't intend to conquer the planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TEACHEROFTHEATER, yoou once again prove that your opinions aren't worth listening to. I tremble at the thought of what you pass on to your students!!!!!!!!!!!

The sad thing is that there are so many people who have seen this charmless film and believe that's what HELLO, DOLLY is all about. It's not. The movie is a piece of garbage that has turned me into an avowed movie hater. If the motion picture industry could turn one of the theater's jewels into this disgusting piece of rubbish, then I refuse to patronize it.

I HATE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See what I mean, Sueleen?

In reading Dollypop's rant, I see he is very close to a stroke...how do I push him over the edge?
