#0Question about Shubert (NYC) seating
Posted: 8/5/04 at 1:19pm

Was wondering if anyone who's been to the Shubert in NYC can tell me what the seating is like. Anyone sat in the the first few rows? Can you see anything, or is the first Balcony a better choice?

thanks,
Laura

I saw Gypsy 5 times there and sat just about everywhere (center balcony, mezzanine, center orchestra rows 12 and 6 as well as front row center.) My favorite seat was front row center orchestra (I was basically in the orchestra pit!) I guess it depends on the show. Gypsy's sets weren't exactly an integral part of the show so I was mainly interested in the actors expressions. If sets had been more of a priority, I probably would have preferred to sit a litle further back. I think I would definately try and sit in the first few orchestra rows as opposed to the balcony, but that is just my opinion.

The only thing I'm sure of is the last few rows of the first balcony. The view of the stage is severly obstructed by the overhang of the second balcony.

I sat about dead-center top balcony for Gypsy. The schubert is, as many of the older houses are, built very verticle. Therefore the top balcony is very steep and you're looking almost straight down to the stage (about a 75 degree angle) The person in front of me kept leaning forward and resting her elbows on her knees. When she did this, I could not see. So avoid the top balcony, it's just for TKTS tourists anyway.

Thanks everyone.....we're planning a trip in the Spring to see Spamalot (assuming it's actually there!!) and I'd love to see the actors up close, but don't want it to be like sitting in the front at a movie theatre, where you're craining your neck all the time!

At Lion King and Producers we had 1st Balcony and they were great, but I'd like to be close this time and have never been to that theatre.

my favorite seata in the Shubert is Front Mezz, row A -- center -- I would think for SPamalot you would want a brader view than facial expression (regardless of the house)

Nothing listed yet -- I also cheked AMEX Gold Card Events and did not see it listed for New York -- although they go on sales for AMEX gold card holders tomorrow for Chicago so it is likey that will be advance release in New York -- if you have gold card....
