I have a question, yesterday i saw spelling bee for the first time and i loved it. During one of the scenes when they had an audience memeber spelling the word, it was the same word that they gave al sharpton at the tonys, something like danky. Anyway he spelt it properly and went back to sit and everyone looked really kind of annoyed and suprised. then the guy who was asking the questions said will you please some back and spell _____, i forgot the word, but it was an impossible word to spell. Anyway, then he finally mispelt it. at the tonys, when he spelled it wrong and then they sang that song. yesterday was he not supposed to spell it properly so they could sing that song? thanks, sorry this is so long and written so sloppy

Well, the audience member can't stay on stage forever, so eventually, yes, the objective is to get him or her to spell a word incorrectly and eliminated from the bee.

But, where they supposed to tell him to spell that word wrong so they could sing that song? Because everyone on stage looked annoyed. thanks for such a quick response!

If they need to get rid of the person, and they keep spelling the words correctly, I kind of think the actors are going to get a bit antsy. When someone is up there too long, that's what they do; they give them a word that everyone knows perfectly well is impossible to spell.

Okay, thanks, yeah it was funny, because when they gave him the really hard word the guy who gives the word looked annoyed and when he asked for a definition, he was like spell this word, and when he asked for a sentence he said no. I was just curious, thanks again!

They always do that- say no to a definition and sentence say spell this word wrong. Still funny every time though.

I'm surprised that they didn't retire the word used at the Tonys. Maybe they asked the guy if he'd seen the Tonys? I don't know why they'd be annoyed; they have to know that after a while someone is going to start getting words right. (Either because others who have seen the show have spread the word, or because of the Tonys.) So maybe their annoyance was not real.

When I saw it, the guy got a word right, and they called him back immediately to try another. It was clear they'd reached the part of the show where they needed him off the stage. The following part had the cast interacting differently, so there was no way they could have an audience member just sitting there.

*possible spoiler*

they always have that reaction on the first "last word" two times that I saw the show they gave the same word and the people spelled it totally differently yet both times the cast said it was correct and acted shocked, then the VP acts really annoyed asks another word and no matter what the person spelling is out (unless they need to use time and do it again re: Question about Spelling Bee Interaction)

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

As smart said, that part is staged. The last audience speller on stage gets a really hard word and manages to "spell it right" even if they spell it wrong. Then they always call her/her right back up for another hard word which they get wrong and then they sing goodbye. The reason they do this is becuase it gets the audience so excited that some random speller is "outsmarting" the cast of BEE. The fact that the VP acts annoyed is in character. When I saw it the first time, it was even funnier because the final audience speller was a young boy about 11 years old.

Why do people keep thinking it's "danky"? It's not even pronounced that way.

Is a puzzlement.

I saw it Sunday and they did the same thing. And it was a kid that spelled it right, so the audience went nuts. So, same thing, gave him an impossible word right away and wouldn't use it in a sentence ...just said "no"...buzzed him out after the first letter.

They're not about to retire a great word like dengue...it has such a funny sentence to go with it.
