Hi, my best friend went for a vocal evaluation the other day and she was told that she had a vibratto in her voice. i know what that is, but I am curious, is it something bad or something to get rid off? I am kind of curious because I really don't know and neither does she, and she says the still want to work with her but when she asked about it they said it didn't matter, she didn't have to worry. Any thoughts? thanks in advance!!! :)
HAHA it's nothing bad, but some people (Judy Garland, Liza Minelli) use it too much. It 's like when you hold out a note, you kind of dip alomst to the note below that, but not really. You probably do it you just don't know what it's called. It's like a up-down-up-down-up-down thing. You have to wait a while until you can develop one that sounds ok, if you are young and have a really fake sounding one it's really bad...you don't want to overdo the vibrato, it will get on my nerves haha...
Yeah, I know what it means, but they were being really secretive when she asked so i'm just kind of curious. they told her it was like when your voice makes, i can't explain, like when it shakes. I don't know. :) lol
it's definitely not a bad thing... but it depends what kind of song your singing... you usually tend to use vibrato when you hold out notes...if its a really fast sticatto piece then vibrato doesnt really apply... i would never say its bad you just need to know how to control it and when or when not to use it

the virbratto is used to color your singing. that's what i would say. it's only bad if it's forced or weak.
Vibratto is generally when your voice jumps in and out of tune. If you're singing choral music it generally isn't a good thing becuse all the vibrattos will blend causing one very "ugly" sound. Again it all depends on what type of music you're singing and generally you don'y want it to be there all the time if singing a solo.
Vibrato isn't a good thing or a bad thing. It depends how you use it. The more you control your voice, the more you can control your vibrato. Different singers have a different speed at which their pitch of the vibrato differs. For example, I, myself, have somewhat of a quick vibrato and small-range vibrato. Not the the point where it sounds like my voice is trembling, but it's not as large as Sutton Foster's vibrato, maybe. Her vibrato is quick, but the pitch that it differs in is very large. Opera singers also tend to have a very wide vibrato.
Vibrato is a very natural thing to have in your voice. Some singers have a "straight-voice", sans vibrato. That's not a good thing. Some people really like that "clean" sound. But vibrato can be a good thing or a bad thing. It just depends how you use it.

Vibrato is a very natural thing that happens when you are breathing correctly and with the diaphram. It should sound and feel as if the sound is almost spinning.
Generally, I wouldn't try to repress it until you know what you are doing and have a lot of control, because that might cause straining and damage. The free-ness of the sound can be affected and it might cause you to tense up, leading to strain.
I actually disagree with the no vibrato in choral music thing. I think it gives the sound a more mature quality, but only if the vibrato is done right. If there's a warble, it can sound off.
