Question: ZIP#0

In the song Zip, the lyric "Will They Make the Metropolitan pay?", what exactly is this referring too. My friend wrote Ken Mandelbaum and even he only had ideas, but nothing solid. Anyone have any guesses or ideas?

Funny, I used to do this number in my act as well. The audience members tossed a napkin in the air everytime I said ZIP. The place was knee deep by the end of the song.

And you know, I have NO IDEA what that line means either...

One has to presume something, and I presumed that The Metropolitan Museum was free at some point, and there was a debate whether to charge admission or not to defray expenses.

I think I came to this because, lo these many years ago, the Brooklyn Museum was free--as in walk through the door and you're in free. When I lived near it, it was the best entertainment in the neighborhood. There was also a raging debate then whether to charge or not. The fear was that it would lose its mission.

I could be very wrong, but that won't be a first.

Do you know the movie version?

They "cleaned" it up a bit....

WOSQ. I'm not sure about that theory. "Will THEY make the Metropolitan pay"? I don't know if that implies free admission for others. Does it maybe have relation to the Dali painting?

Who are THEY making the Metropolian Pay? And for what?

Ask Miriam (Onceadancer2). I believe this show is one of her specialties.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Email Peter Filichia -- even more so than Mandelbaum, this kind of question is right up his alley (and he's very nice, too).

"They" to me, refers to the Powers-That-Be, the Board of the Met Museum.

Someone could also contact the Met Museum and ask then if they are the "Metropolitan" referred to in Zip. If they are, ask what the hell does this all mean.

Or ask Stritch.
