One has to presume something, and I presumed that The Metropolitan Museum was free at some point, and there was a debate whether to charge admission or not to defray expenses.
I think I came to this because, lo these many years ago, the Brooklyn Museum was free--as in walk through the door and you're in free. When I lived near it, it was the best entertainment in the neighborhood. There was also a raging debate then whether to charge or not. The fear was that it would lose its mission.
I could be very wrong, but that won't be a first.
