re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

Just for everyone's information...
the NYU production was amazing and rumor has it blew the entire original creative team out of the water.

As for the names...
Mother and Father are "Mother and Father" because the story is mostly told through Edgar's perspective (edgar is EL Doctorow's first name). It is his story. During the story, he does not learn the little girls name until the very end so she is "the little girl". Everyone else to him has a name "Colehouse" and "Sarah". Then all of the "real people" have names because they are historic figures.

FYI, Musical Theater West, in the LA area (Long Beach), is mounting Ragtime in February. This is an Equity company that draws on the LA talent pool and I just saw their production of She Loves me which was excellent, so I have high hopes!
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

Anyone know the chances of another nation tour being mounted, or of Broadway in Chicago sponsoring Ragtime? If they're willing to make space for Starlight Express, surely they can bring Ragtime -- which was a huge success here in 1999 -- back to the city!

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

Hate to break up the RAGTIME discussion, but:

"First of all, a recording of a Broadway show is an "Original Cast Album", not a "Soundtrack.""

Semi-incorrect. What about revivals? They aren't original.

Recordings of shows are generally called "Cast Recordings." There are Original Broadway Cast Recordings, Revival Broadway Cast Recordings, Original Cast Albums, Revival Cast Albums. But the term most used nowadays is "Cast Recording."

Now, back to RAGTIME - LOVE the music by Ahrens & Flaherty. I attended the recent show in Raleigh, NC with Julia Murney. Fantastic show!

Powerful, catchy, timeless.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

It is unlikely that a national tour of RAGTIME will ever be mounted again, especially since colleges, community theatres and even hugh schools are doing it now (a local high school did it last year - spending over $30,000 on the production - including $4000 to rent the Model T).

In the case of STARLIGHT EXPRESS, it continues to tour because amateur rightds are not available. Frankly, would you want to see a bunch of amateurs trying to avoid serious injury while skating around like maniacs?

Nuts! But aren't high schools also doing West Side Story, a show that's about to be mounted on Broadway again?

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

It's fun to listen to all the guessing about what E.L. Doctorow meant by his character names. There is no pattern. Yes, Tateh is of course Yiddish "Papa" and he later renames himself "Baron Ashkenazi" to reflect his Central/Eastern European Jewish origin.

The characters of Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and Sarah, like Mother, Father, and other were NOT based on actual persons. Accounts of their interaction with historical (Booker T. Washington, Robert Perry, Matthew Henson etc.) people were fiction based on speculation "Knowing what we do about Booker T. Washington, if he had a conversation with Coalhouse what would he have said?"

The musical version of Ragtime was more Broadway Political than the original book or the excellent 1981 movie directed by Milos Foreman http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082970/

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

After reading this thread I decided to revisit the cast recording after not having heard it for a couple years and was reminded of one aspect of the show that I found somewhat strange. There are several moments in the show in which it seems as though Edgar is somewhat clairvoyant. Did anyone else notice this, and what is your take on it?

You mean "Warn the Duke"? Yes, Edgar is precognitive. I'm not entirely sure what that means, though. Especially since Edgar is (sort of) Doctorow.

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

Yep, that's one of the instances I was referring to. He also wakes up from a bad dream at one point and says something to the effect of "There's going to be an explosion." Another time, he says to Mother after first encountering Tateh and his little girl, "We're going to know those people." In addition to that, he foresees that one of the men injured in an explosion is going to die before the evening is through.

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

I know I am entering this conversation a little late, but I absolutely love Ragtime. I read the book after I saw it, and b/c of my age at the time (12), struggled through its language.

I later wrote a research paper comparing the musical and book, and I touched on a lot of the things you all have been mentioning in this post. For example, in the book: The Little Boy DOES NOT have a name. He is merely known as the Little Boy, and that's it. They changed his name to Edgar for the Broadway musical, probably b/c of his being somewhat like a narrator, and b/c EL's name is Edgar. The last time I read this book was about 3 years ago for the paper, and all this talk makes me want to go back and read it again.

Evelyn--what parts of the novel where you refering to when you said there was a homoerotic scene? I don't remember that...

Isn't here a scdene involving Emma Goldman giving Evelyn Nesbit a massage, while Younger Brother is hiding in the closet?

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

I definitely remember a homoerotic scene involving Goldman, but I don't remember the details. I haven't read the book in...something like 5 years now.

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

There are two homoerotic incidents that occur closer to the beginning:

- Goldman leads Nesbit into her apartment, makes her remove her corset to reveal all the welts from the whippings that Thaw gave her, and then massages her while she relaxes in the nude. Nesbit is in something of an orgasmic state as this occurs, while Younger Brother hides in the closet and masturbates to it.

- Houdini is performing a stunt at a prison known as The Tombs. He has to disrobe so that he can remove all of the wires hidden on his body and use them to escape from the cell. In the cell directly across from his is Harry Thaw. Anyway, as Houdini dresses again, Thaw begins to disrobe at the same time and flaps his penis through the cell bars for Houdini. Houdini is frightened by this and runs away as quickly as possible. In reality, Thaw was known to have pursued homosexual relationships in which he played the role of sadist against the will of younger men; in fact, he was jailed for it over a decade after the Stanford White murder trial.

re: RAGTIME - Coalhouse Walker's Identity?

My Dad got the cast recording (sorry about calling it a soundtrack...) out of the library on a whim, and I've been listening to it for weeks. I love it, the music is very powerful. And I think that the only reason it didn't win the tony for Best Musical was because it came out in 1998, and th Lion King won. I haven't read the book, but I want to, if I can find it. And sorry about the spelling mistake, I didn't catch it until after I had posted the message, and then I couldn't figure out how to fix it.
