This makes my seventh time seeing RENT; my second time seeing it on Broadway. (And yes, I know some of you have seen it countless times--probably triple my amount--but I've never been to see ANYTHING seven times---it's just my love for RENT.)
I must say that it was, by far, the best performance of RENT I've ever seen. Drew Lachay was out--Matt Caplan was in! Thank goodness! He was the most amazing Mark I've ever seen! Jeremy Kushnier was great. Kelly Karbacz--finally, a Maureen not played like a ditz! She was so filled with passion and really had that performace artist air. Krystal Washington--who I saw on tour--was also great. Destan Owens was one of the best Collins' I've seen, also. Frenchie Davis was obviously hired for Seasons of Love---which she delivered beautifully, but everything else from her was just okay. Justin Johnston was a decent Angel--he erupted during Contact, however, and shined. Catrice Joseph as Joanne--I was unsure how I felt about her until Take Me or Leave Me, when she really turned it out.
Overall, the production was one of the tighest and most passionate ones I've seen. A joy, for sure! Can't wait for number eight!
Oh---and Taylor Hanson (lead singer of Hanson) was there with his wife. My first celebrity crush at fifteen--and I couldn't even speak to him. I was too busy hyperventalating and shaking like a little girl...But, he seemed to enjoy himself and was veryt cordial to a friend of mine who spoke to him and gave his autograph...And, in case you were wondering, he's still hot. (At least I think so.)
