Maybe it was due to the height? I'm not sure. It is a rather subtle show, at least how Russell was playing it, which was perfect.

Well, I just like a GOOD Roger, and Declan isn't it. I felt like he didn't understand the character at all, but only knew that he was a Rocker with a Problem. Cause that's all I got.

I saw Rent last night and really did not enjoy Declan's take on Roger at all!!!! He seemed too rough and too angry the whole time. I would have liked to see more levels to this character. The guy that played Mark was ok. He did his job and played the character well, but it was nothing amazing. Karmine was on for Mimi and I though she was really good. The guy that played Angel was great I thought and I really liked the girl that played Maureen. She seemed to make Maureen more quirky than I'd seen before and I liked it. Oh and there was a girl in the ensemble that really impressed me...in fact it wasn't until the very end that I realized that this girl played all the different parts, she really embodied each one so well and they were so different that I actually thought it was a different ensemble person each time. But it was the girl that has the pigtails for much of it.
Sorry I don't have the names of the actual actors, my playbill is in the other room and I don't feel like getting it, but Karmine and the girl that played Joanne were the only big understudies on last night so everyone else was the normal cast.

From hearing all these things, I now pray that I get a Roger understudy on Monday 14 April, when I'll see the show ! It will be my third time, but it's my friend's first and I want him to LOVE Rent and a bad Roger can ruin the whole experience !!!

Greekmusicalfan...even if the guy that plays Roger is not out, your friend actually may like him. I say this because I went with my friend last night and she had never seen Rent before. She really liked the Declan. I didn't care for him and apparently neither do many people on here, but you never know and especially since your friend won't have any one to compare him to it might be ok.

Thank you alex ! Since, you were one of the first ones to see the new Mark, could you elaborate more about him ? He looks gorgeous on the pics, but I know nothing about his talent !

yep I'll try. Well I didn't actually know that he was new at Mark. How new is he? Maybe he is just not quite comfortable and confident with the entire role yet. I thought he was good, he seemed to know the role well and was able to embody the character and cover all the different levels and aspects of the part throughout the show. However I felt in certain parts he could have commanded the stage more, sometimes I felt he would get lost among the other actors on stage (he just didn't stand out as much as I would have liked). Mostly this happened in the bigger scenes with all the actors. It was just one of those performances that you thought was good but nothing where you would leave after the show and want to tell everyone how great he was.

According to Playbill, he took the role on March 24 and it's his first role on Broadway ! I'm sure he'll improve with time ! If nothing else, I bet he has the determination and energy lacking by others, who have been with the show for looooooong !!

yeah although I will say the energy on stage seemed pretty good among all the performers last night. The audience was totally full and super excited which I'm sure helped fuel their energy. I heard people complaining back in Jan and Feb that the on stage energy was lacking, but I think now with spring break audiences it will be better (which it really shouldn't matter if it's sold out or not, the on stage energy should always be the same, but apparently it's not).

I'm glad that it sounds like a GOOD show again ! I have read the complaints about previous performances, too and I'd hate, my last time seeing it (and the first time of my friend's who has heard soooo much from me over the years), to be a so and so experience !!!

Both of the leads have been doing the tour for a year now, and started on Broadway in March, so it's not like they're newbies.
