REVIEW: LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE at the La Jolla Playhouse

Why does everyone harp on title songs all of a sudden? Should "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Thoroughly Modern Millie", "Oklahoma" have been cut from their scores?

Did a book come out that every community theatre reviewer read that says "Title songs are ALWAYS a bad idea."

REVIEW: LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE at the La Jolla Playhouse

Imagine if they cut "Into the Woods" from INTO THE WOODS. "Company" from COMPANY. "Beauty and the Beast" from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. "Hair" from HAIR. "42nd Street" from 42ND STREET. "Cabaret" from CABARET. "Mame" from MAME. "Hello, Dolly" from HELLO, DOLLY. "Ragtime" from RAGTIME.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

REVIEW: LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE at the La Jolla Playhouse

I saw the 3/6/11 matinee performance of LMS. Enjoyed it a lot, though the book needs some tightening. The staging is superb. William Finn's music and lyrics were fine and I can't wait to hear the OBC recording. All in all a good start.

REVIEW: LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE at the La Jolla Playhouse

The other reviews are all quite positive. However my friends and I were all bored and not impressed. I kept looking at my watch wondering if the first act would ever end. The second act was OK. I just didn't see the charm that the reviewers saw. And I didn't feel a connection among the characters.

I guess different strokes.....
