Saw both of them. this is my review.
Musicals of Musicals - is a BRILLIANT way to spend the time and watch some solid perormances by true artists on stage. It is a REALLY great show if you know your musical theatre history...otherwise..it may go over your head..But if you're well versed in sondheim, webber, kander and ebb, herman and rodgers and hammerstein musicals...you'll have a wild time.
even if you dont get everything..it is still fun to watch these actors work up there.
They recreate the same plot 5 different times, as if these composers took over the storyline. It's sort of like FOrbidden Broadway with a little more clever writing and originality...and amusin for the musical newcomer..to the theatre snobs. Great little theatre too at Dodger STages. RATING= 8
All Shook Up- ..great strong cast.....everything else?????? errr ummmmmm...
.........................it was "cute fun'...and there's no other way to describe it. Can't see myself racing to go back and see it again. I felt it was trying way too hard on so many levels. And trying real hard to be 'Hairspray'...I also found some wrong inconsistencies...such as.(just one of many examples) ..in 1955,..blacks weren't allowed to own businesses in the midwest...especially in politically run towns like this one was set out to be...and a black woman owns this bar they all meet..with white customers inside to boot! I thought that was pretty unresearched.....I also felt that they tried too hard to fit a storyline around Elvis tunes. And there was no need for a set change for EVERY single moment of the show. I thought it was a 'cute' show for the tourists.....but there's better stuff out there to see. RATING=5
