The original director of Broadway's Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar died in his sleep yesterday after a battle with Alzheimer's (something my own mother passed away from just this November).
I found Ben Vereen's comments quite interesting:
Ben Vereen, who starred in Mr. O'Horgan's Hair and Superstar, said in 2007 that shows like Spring Awakening were possible because of the ground that Mr. O'Horgan broke.
Vereen told the Times, "I see a show like Spring Awakening, and I say, 'Oh, that's Tom O'Horgan,' but no one stands up and says 'thank you.'"

Winter 1972-72. Not only JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at the Mark Hellinger, but all three Broadway houses on W.47th street had Tom O'Horgan productions:
HAIR - Biltmore
LENNY - Brooks Atkinson
INNER CITY - Barrymore
Thank you Tom O'Horgan for some of my most memorable Broadway experiences!
