ROA, The Audition, doesn't make the grade

I thought the latest ROA webisode, The Audition, (which can be seen here on BWW) started off funny enough, but then at the end Wesley ( I assume it was him) put in a gag mocking people with special needs.

I thought it was unnecessary.

If you wanted slurred speech, Mitch could have said, "You know Biff just had his wisdom teeth pulled and he's still numb from the anesthesia."

This episode hit me the wrong way, sorry dudes.

(Spoilers for "The Audition")

Wesley wrote the script according to the credits.

I see what you're saying, but I had a little bit of a different take on it. Wesley's character (Billy) is supposed to be a fool, annoying, and a bad actor (the "hardworking drummer" gesture). His portrayal of the gay Biff isn't much better -- both of the portrayals are very stereotypical and purposely stupid.

I don't think that Wesley's intent is to mock gay people or people with special needs -- I think he's trying to mock Billy for making these poor acting choices. (YMMV, of course.)
"What was the name of that cheese that I like?" "you can't run away forever...but there's nothing wrong with getting a good head start" "well I hope and I pray, that maybe someday, you'll walk in the room with my heart"

Mike,

The "hardworking drummer" line with Wesley's motion as if he is hitting an actual drum, was really, really good.

I can envision Wes doing that scene, numb from the anesthesia, taking a drink of water from a paper cup, and dribbling it as he speaks...

A slur is still a slur, even if comical. But as you said, those are my thoughts, and your mileage may vary.

That's funny; I actually thought the opposite. I thought his gesture was broad and mannered in a elementary school show choir way, and was supposed to show what a bad actor Billy actually was.

I must thoroughly disagree with you, Sally - I thought it was brilliant! I snorted out loud quite a lot. Like mikem, I felt the sketch was obviously centred around what an idiot and a bad actor Billy was. Comedy shouldn't have to be completely politically correct if it's done in the right way - he's not mocking the disabled, which would be unacceptable.

I loveeeeeed him warming up in the silence of the room, and how obnoxious he was to all the other people there. The mannered miming showed his lack of skill with acting and was just plain funny. I also thought the building up from gay to molested and then 'retarded' as the others sabotaged him more and more was hilarious (plus you could see the guy behind him cracking up in the gay, molested AND retarded version).

Completely brilliant.

I just think there is no need to use the "R" word, and it's derogatory.

I think it also would have been offensive if they used other words that are often used for "gay." Guess they don't find those words quite as brilliant and hilarious as the "R" word.

But I hear you all, so I am letting it go. And thank you guys for offering opinions without flaming. We can agree to disagree and move on.

As most everyone knows by now, the video has been made private on YouTube.

As a big fan of ROA, Wesley, and the webisodes, I look forward to the next one.
