RUSH Tickets vs. LOTTERY tickets

Hey everyone...new to New York from San Francisco...avid theatre fan and musical theatre actor. Just wondering if anyone can point me to information regarding general rush tickets for any shows that offer them, as well as lottery, and then...the TKTS booth...any tips on when and which one to go to get the best tickets?

I know it's a lot to ask, and it's probably all been covered, so I apologize in advance.
