On Raúl Esparza's website, there's a link to a radio interview he did for Downstage Center. It's a really great interview; it's 45 minutes long, so he goes into detail about many of the different roles he's done, how he got started in theater, etc. The only bad part is that they cut out the songs for copyright reasons, but they do introduce the songs that were played.
Interview
i want to see it, but i should go to bed.......
hee. Fantastic - thank you!! I'm going to listen later!
I'm about halfway through it right now.
This man always knocks my socks off - his intelligence and his drive, work ethic and love for what he does are absolutely mind-blowing. He's so eloquent and soft-spoken, I could absolutely listen to him all day long. I learned at the Chatterbox last year that he has absolutely worked his ass off to be where he is, and this is even more serious than that interview was, it goes so much deeper; he's truly unbelievable. He interviews beautifully - so much heart and honesty, emotions on his sleeve. Brilliance.
ETA - oh God, this is the part about TTB. About Daphne telling him he needed to go do it, and about crying over the script, and how he could relate so well to it.
.... he just talked about the performance they did for the OBC of RENT - about he and Adam after the show.
... September 11th.
Is it weird that I'm crying?
Having that poster, signed, about to go up on my wall, and the mental image of him standing next to me looking at it, wondering where I'd managed to dig one up from suddenly mean so much more - now I think I know why he signed it "Raúl E. Esparza 'Jon.'"
There aren't enough things I can say about the wonder that is Raúl - guys, please listen to this. He's such an inspiration, and absolute genius.
Oh wow, thank you for posting this.
wow, thank you so much. You're my hero right now!

In addition to that interview - Raul was part of a Theater Wing seminar last week - and we'll be posting a video link on his site in the next couple of weeks. Keep on the look-out...I hear the entire panel was very interesting.

Bumpity bump. In pure shameless action.
Please go listen to this.
Thanks Becky, can't wait for the video. And thanks for originally posting this interview!
I normally don't like starting topics, but I knew people here would love to hear this, so I figured that unlike me, most people wouldn't be randomly lurking around the recordings page of Raúl's website.
I just love how he interviews; he's always mentioning the same things that touched him as a child and continue to affect him to this day.
The TTB part definitely made me want to post this especially, because it was just amazing. It was really interesting when he talked about how they took out the references to Jonathan dying, because they didn't think anyone would believe he had actually said that. But Raúl talking about the shows they did right after September 11th, and the Rent OBC going to see the show made me tear up.
(saving Emcee another bump) EVERYONE LISTEN!
I cried. After it was over, I pulled my signed TTB poster out of the plastic and just sort of looked at it, crying. It was silly and pathetic, but that thing means about 100 times more now.
Bumpity bump... off of page two, just because.
I'm listening again.
