Well, I saw it on Saturday night, and haven't been able to post about it since, but here it goes. I was excited about this show, and having seen it, I am still happy, but my expectations were not met. Sutton was amazing, that was lived up to, her "Astonishing" and "Operatic Tragedies" were wonderful. Maureen McGovern was out, but the part was so small, it really didn't matter, although her understudy was terriffic! All of the sisters were great, especially Beth. The men were fine. The sets were incredible, and the costumes were very nice. The lighting was also really good. The first act should be shortened by at least fifteen minutes, because it lagged on waaaay too much. The second act was fine in terms of time. The running time was 2 hours and 4 minutes including intermission. I would recommend this show to a fan of the book, as it stays true to its original source. The book was very strong and could definitely take the Tony, the score I found enjoyable, but repetitive, and asides from "Astonishing" and "Take a Chance on Me", the score was fairly forgettable. Well, thats my take. I do hope this show does well, and I will definitely see it again once it opens to see if they have made appropriate changes. Three Cheers for Professor Bhaer! Hip Hip Hooray!
I give "Little Women" three out of four stars.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Are you sure it was two hours, not three? When it was at Duke, the show was about three hours long. They must have cut a lot of stuff!!

Oh, okay. that must have been a typo then. thanks! by the way, I am seeing it again on Thursday! yay!
I also saw Little Women during their previews. Maureen McGovern was not there when i saw it too(both times). THe music I must say is ASTONISHING. But i tottaly dissagree on the book. The acting of the cast as a whole wasnt that great, but the rest of the elements of the show made up for it. And Sutton....God!......AMAZING!! I smell a Tony.
I saw Little Women last Sunday (12/26). I was really excited for it because Louisa May Alcott's novel is my all time childhood favorite, I've probably read it at least 12 times. However, I could not have been more disappointed. While the book writer stayed truthful to the original work, he/she managed to suck all life, drama and heart out of it. The music was really weak. There was not one memorable tune (not even Astonishing) and each number brought the scenes to a grinding halt instead of helping move the story forward. I was not that impressed with the cast. I was extremely disappointed in Laurie. The actor played him all wrong, in my opinion. Amy was yes, incredibly annoying, and I too spent a lot of the time wondering if she was a child or an adult (I mean the actress). Maureen McGovern was out but I was shocked at how small the part was and Sutton was very enjoyable but she can't do much with this.
I don't see how you think the Book could win the TONY.
The Book I felt was, along with the lyrics, the weakest point in an overall weak show.
Very uneven, choppy and cliche.
My favorite song is "Somethings Are Meant to Be." God, I cried so hard.
I adored that song, Spider. It was wonderful and powerful and Megan McGinnis was a marvel.
But it was the only great song in the show.
Agreed. I liked Maureen McGovern's songs because she just F'in rocked and I like the song(s) where she read her stories and the actions took place behind her. But, everything else was good but no where near great.
They just really need to tighten it up and work on it in previews or the critics will tear it apart as it is right now.
Did Sutton overact during act 1? Like was she overtly goofy? That is how I thought of her when I saw her in NC. And yes, I agree. I HATED that song she sang with her aunt. BLAH!!

I'm really happy you enjoyed it. They're all really talented (except I don't really like Danny Gurwin but other than him...)
She overacted at first, but toned it down.
She saves the crappy material and I give her props for it, too.
And yes 'Could You' was awful.
'Take A Chnace on Me' was overdone.
McGinnis and Powers are the only thing that made me refrain from completely hating the show.
McGinnis was such a sweetheart. I just wanted to give her a huge hug (That is probably why I cried so hard during "Somethings Are Meant to Be"). Maureen McGovern and McGinnis were my favorites. I went in anticipating Sutton but she really didn't impress me that much. Oh well!! Maybe next time, kiddo!
And Jenny Powers is gorgeous!
OH YEAH!!! Grrrrrrrowl
I thought "Take a Chance on Me" "Amazing" and "Days of Plenty" were very good. By far, "Astonishing" and "The Weekly Volcano Press" are the best songs of the show! "Some Things Are Meant to be" is good, but not great.

There was a lot of cutting. The show runs about 2 45 with intermission
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
