Her show DIVINE MADNESS was at the Minskoff Theatre in 1979 and she was in the Original Broadway Cast of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.

Check out old tapes of her Divine Madness shows for a good laugh - nothing better than Bette in a mermaid tail and an electric wheelchair... A truly entertaining show, but not quite musical theater...

Not quite the original cast, she was a replacement for the eldest daughter about a year or two into the original run. After she left the show, she started doing cabaret, ended up at the Continental Baths as the Divine Miss M and the rest is history.

Bette first played the Palace in December of 1973. Her Clams on the Halfshell Revue was at the Minskoff in 1975. Divine Madness played the Majestic in December of 1979. She was awarded a special Tony award in 1974 for 'adding lustre to the broadway season.'

My friend was her accompanist at the Continental Baths. I think she's a legend...

rockfenris - Don't play coy - any queen worth her salt knows Ms. Mildew's accompanist was Mr. Manilla. Updated On: 8/30/04 at 04:03 AM

No, no. It was not Manilow. He was backing for another singer, and she called him on one night for a performance. He said he was the only person wearing clothes in this huge bathroom and that it made him feel very uneasy. He likes Bette Midler. Thinks she's a legend. This person, however, has also worked with Barry Manilow... so there's a connection there as well. I don't know if they knew each other then tho' re: Random Bette Midler question...
